I ordered for the first and only time several years ago from Green Mountain transplants, and will never order from them again. Their problems are not late shipments and crop failures. Their problem is the total and complete lack of concern for their customers, their constant and persistant lies, and their refusals to answer calls or address customer concerns.

I eventually contacted a Maine consumer complaints office, and finally got my money back.

I don't care how good their plants may be (if you ever get them). I don't want to be treated like that.

I ordered from them a month ago and did not get my plants either. Before I ordered I googled them and found this webiste:

Basically says good plants, bad customer service since its a mom and pop operation. I'm okay w/that as long as the plants are nice and the prices are good.

I placed an order via snail mail 2 months ago for delivery this week. I received no receipt in the mail, so out of concern, I called them up to find out if they received my order. They took my name and number and said they'd call me back. I called back 2 days later, they said they'd call me back. I called back last week, same story; I called back yesterday and the owner yells out - "Did we get an order from Wieder?" and within 3 seconds someone yells out "yea." Either they memorized all their orders or they don't really care about customer service. Either one.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I called them the fouth time today and insisted on getting the information now, not being called back.Eventually they told me my package was in transit, no tracking code though, so we'll see...

I keep getting suckered in by their prices, and when I finally gets them, they are good quality plants. This year really will be my last. I ordered March 29, and they actually did find the order and said they'd be shipped mid-May. If they come within a week of mid May, I'll be pleasantly surprised. But I'd bet I'll see them the second wk of June. There's not a lot of use in complaining, it is simply the way the company is run.

Has anyone received a shipment yet?

We made a stop at GMT on a recent Saturday that we were in the area. I have debated sharing our experiences online because I don't want to add to GMT's reputation problems, but at the same time, I do think that people who are considering ordering from them should have the benefit of other people's experience with them to consider before making a purchase.

I really like the fact that they offer plugs of varieties of plants that I am really looking for. Their prices for the 72cell flats are excellent! That is what I like about them. On the other hand, there does seem to be a problem with organization. I can't say if it is just the nature of the management or if it is not enough staff to do what needs doing, due to cost constraints. They are easy to get to. The staff is very friendly. They are part Agway store/part Greenhouses. They offer lots of garden related merchandise, and the usual Agway products. They do have a shrub area, but I didn't have time to look through there. I spent all of my time going through two large hoop houses, selecting plants. They are organized alphabetically and in some areas this worked out very easily, but I left without 50% of what was on my list. Disappointed that they offer it on their website but either they didn't have it or it wasn't in good condition so I didn't want it. Some of the varieites which are named cultivars, such as Hosta Sagae, which was one that was on my list, seemed to be from poor stock. I was very disappointed that it didn't look anything like any Sagae I had ever seen. It didn't appear to have much variegation and the structure of the plant with the upfacing foliage was not very obvious.

I had some things on my list that I would have been very happy to bring home...a Hydrangea 'Madame Emile Mouillere' that I really wanted, they had everything but that. They offered Hibiscus Blue River II and had every one but that one. I wanted Echinacea and Dicentra alba, but I left all of them there because they were covered with white flies. White flies were a major concern.

There was no one to help you or ask a question or find something for you, unless you pull someone away from a register. BTW, they have not updated their website in quite awhile and their prices have gone up. So all in all, if they were right around the corner from me, I would probably keep trying them because if you can look the plant material over before you buy it, you can find something you want that is in good shape and for a good price. I did come home with some plants that I anticipate being happy with. But I would be pretty much unwilling to order from them through the mail. Having already done that once and had a pretty unhappy experience.

Organization does seem to be a problem at gmtransplants. I emailed them twice, first to give them a list of alternate selections for my order, then to advise them that I'd had to cancel my credit card due to fraudulent charges, and asked them to please contact me immediately to obtain a new number. I did not receive responses to either email. I called Monday to advise them of the credit card problem and gave them the information they needed. The gentleman I spoke to (both times,same voice as the answering machine) then called back on Tuesday, at which point I reminded him that I'd given him the information on Monday. I called again on Wednesday to make sure that he'd gotten the information and the charge had gone through. He said it had, and that the plants had been shipped.

Here's hoping the plants are okay. Whitefly isn't a big concern for me, because insects overall aren't a big concern for me. They get eaten by other insects and birds or killed in the dry air or chilled to death by our cool nights. Most insect pests that survive all of that are then chased mercilessly by my new psychokitten. He LOVES bugs!

I've finally got all my plants, 3x 32 cell flats. The packaging is good. The plant quality is mixed. The Geranium 'rozanne' are definitely in better shape than the ones I ordered from bluestone last year. However, quite a lot of plants are actually too much root bound and I had to trim the root of. They were probably grown in the tiny pots for more than a year already. The siberian iris are the biggest dissappointment.

I think I will order from them again if I need a mass of ground cover plants, but not anything else. Buying and dividing a $8 perennial from local would probably make more sense.

I received my plants today. The Hostas are excellent value, everything else except the Zinnias good to fair value (but hey, 6 Zinnias at .55 a plant isn't something I'm going to waste energy fussing about). The lack of communication was not to my taste, but I'd use gmtransplants again (okay, WILL use them again) for the 32-plant flats of annuals. I tell myself I'm out of room for perennials. Yeah, riiiiight...

I live not too far from them and took a trip there a few weeks ago. They are basically 3 greenhouses attached to an Agway. The hostas especially are an excellent value. Larger and less expensive than Bluestone Perennials even. The place is not exactly organized or welcoming. You sort of have to figure it out for yourself, so I'd say they are, in general, disorganized.

My order arrived - which was a shock since I didn't even get a confirmation they received my order form 3 months ago. I have to say I am very upset at the substitutions they provided. On their order form you can tell them how they should fill your flat if they are out of a requested variety. I requested they just increase the quantity of another plant I ordered - that way they wouldn't be shipping me plants I had no want/use for. Here is what happened on just one 32 cell flat:
Geranium Dusty Crugen replaced with Geranium Rozanne (I did not order any Rozanne)
Sedum Diamond Edge replaced with Sedum Frost Morn (I did not order any Frosty Morn)
Hosta Hope replaced with Hosta Stilleto (I did not order any Stilleto)
Lobelia Royal Fuchsia replaced with Lobelia Cranberry Crush (I did not order any Cranberry Crush)
Huecherella Stoplight - ordered 2; one was replaced by Heucherella Sunspot (Did not order Sunspot) and one was replaced with Salvia May Night (I DID order May Night)

So, to recap, of 32 plants, they were already sold out of 6. Of those 6, only 1 was replaced according to my request. They charged me for 5 of 32 plants that I did not authorize them to send me. If they would have someone who cared about customer service I would call for an adjustment, but it would be pointless with their current staff.

The prices are good, but keep in mind, you're probably paying 20% more then what you think for the plants you want due to the substitution situation, and that's even if they have what you ordered.

Just got my 72 cell flat. The plants are healthy looking, but I have the same issue with substitutions as mwieder. I ordered a mix of flowers and veggies. Didn't get ONE of the tomato varieties I ordered, they chose subs for me instead. I ordered a mix of colored peppers, got 2 plants of one variety I ordered, the rest were subbed and all I got were green peppers.
Ordered some oriental poppies 'carneum' to fill out an area where I already have one. They subbed a different poppy.
I've long stuck up for Green Mountain, giving them the benefit of the doubt when they were moving, etc. I think I just got my last order from them. Too long a wait to find out I didn't get what I wanted, and now have to scramble around to try and find them locally. Would have been simpler to have started it all from seed myself :(

Last February, I placed an order by phone with this company. I was glad I called, because some of the items that were on the website were actually not available.

Since then, no word from them, no phone calls returned. I just gave up, and bought the plants I wanted someplace else.

Then, last week, they called out of the blue to let me know that they did not have the Agastache rupestris (I had ordered a 32 plant flat of half A. rupestris and half A. "tutti frutti") and asked if I wanted a whole flat of the "tutti frutti" or wanted to substitute something else, e.g. "A. blue fortune".

I opted for the whole flat of A. "tutti frutti." The plants arrived the next day (sent fed ex overnight), and were as good as any mail order plants I have ever had delivered!!!

The roots were in excellent shape, and clearly could have filled a gallon container in about four weeks.

I put them right in the garden, and they have really taken off.

In this order also was a flat of Achillea "Anthea" which arrived still needing a bit of time before they were ready for the garden---I will put them in this weekend.

I also ordered a 72 plant flat of annuals for the window boxes---These plants needed to be transplanted immediately into larger pots, were very healthy, about the size of Bluestone plants.

Since I had given up on ever seeing these plants, they were like a surprise gift, and I am very glad to have them!

I don't like to spend a lot of money on annuals, so the window boxes and containers at my house never look as good as they might, but this year I think those 72 plants will go a long way, and they were a great value.

I ordered in February and received the plants last week, just as I requested. I am really excited about the great quality of the plants. This is the third year in a row I have ordered and have been happy every year. Peonies, iris, and heuchera, misc., I got last year are thriving this year. Its ok if they don't talk to me as long as they keep sending the great plants.

I got 1 of my two orders (ordered at different time) and they are NICE!! I will order again.

I received my credit card bill today and I was surprised to see gmtransplants overcharged me $45 for the three flats (Yes, I count the shipping charge and I ordered three full flats). I called my friend who also ordered from them this spring and she said she was overcharged roughly $20 for one flat.

Coupled with the bad customer service, now this merchant definitely looks like a big no no to me from now on. I wonder if anyone else who paid with credit card had the same nasty surprise?

It is unfortunate that they are not better with their web site, catalog and customer service. I received an order update (probably because I ordered last year) that showed they had a price increase (first one in many years). Their prices are still good relatively, and so that was not a concern for me. It's too bad that all the customers were not informed.

My order was charged to my credit card for about $40 higher than the website price total, but I checked the priority mail slips and it cost gmtransplants about $20 more per flat than stated on the website to ship them. Since I bought three flats, they essentially absorbed $20 in shipping costs, and I know the costs of boxes, plastics, labor, energy, fertilizer and plant starts have all increased since the 2003 prices posted on their website, so I'm okay with the increased charge. Yes, I'd rather have an accurate accounting, and that could have been cured with a quick email (as could have many other customer service issues I encountered), but I still think I got fair value for my money and the priority mail slips made the price increase abundantly clear.
