Need advice on getting Scotts Rider to mulch correctly

I recently purchased a used Scotts 1642 riding mower. I had it serviced before using and that included putting Gator Blades on. I have used it to bag and it does ok but leaves a small trail of grass (that at times looks uncut) between the blades. I have also used the side discharge and it works ok.

The issue I have is that the mower does not mulch well at all. It leaves clumps of grass all over the yard that look really crappy. My push mower (Toro) set at the same height (4") makes the yard look fantastic and mulches really well. I tried taking the height on the Scotts down, first to 3 5/8 then 3 1/4 with the same results. I even tried different speeds on the mower while mulching.

If anyone can offer any advice on the trail of grass between the blades when bagging or the poor mulching I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to mulch the majority of the time and bag when the grass gets too high to mulch. Thanks.
