Myth or fact?

Last year I ripped out a bunch of roses that I did not like. I purchased a bunch more I do like and planted them in the same places that the old ones were in. So fast forward to last week, I am watching California's Gold on PBS with Huel Howser (what a doofus) and he is at some large rose farm in southern California, I think it was Weeks Roses. The master gardener there said that after they harvest a crop for re-sale they leave the spot bear from any roses for three years because the rose gives off a chemical that will kill any other rose that is succession planted in the same spot. Well this is exactly what I did, plant in the same spot back to back, and my roses are growing fine. What's the real deal?
