Toro/Tecumseh - No Spark
Comments (5)Thanks to all that replied. I replaced the coil today, and it now runs. All I need to do now is sharpen the blades and it should be good to go. The coil cost 37.50..wow..... Thanks again...See MoreOld Tecumseh engine problem has me baffled
Comments (26)Hey I ran into exact starting issues. would start easy, fire a couple three maybe times then die right off. I see you fixed yours but this was so the same symptoms that I must post this remedy for mine. 10 HP Tecumseh motor has a low oil sensor that won't let the motor run. I knew when I starting using this generator that the oil was completely topped off, I checked. Even showed to my daughter who was borrowing for power outage. When the motor stopped running they assumed it was due to low gas, and it was lower but not quite out. They refilled the tank and then this nightmare loop exactly as you described ensued for me. I had already gone through some of the steps you had also with the carb and other things. While in the process of removing the recoil so I could check ignition switch for shorts I decided to read the tag on the pull rope. Warning engine will not start and run without oil filled to proper level. I did not know it even had a low oil sensor. I checked the oil not really expecting anything because I had previously checked the oil before initial start up. Guess what, yeah, it was low. I topped it off and it started right up again, but this time it kept running...ahhh, go figure. That was just too easy I missed it. Posted this in case anyone else out there is pulling their hair out on a similar problem....See MoreAriens 5hp Tecumseh- No Spark
Comments (4)What andyma said. You could also remove the kill wire from the blower that hooks up below the carb to eliminate that circuit for testing. How are you testing for spark BTW? If you are using a spark plug, make sure you are holding it to a point on the engine to where you are sure it is grounded well. After 10 years sitting, it will need a carb or carb service almost certainly. You can post the spec # from the engine and we can tell you more if you need more help....See More17.5 Tecumseh has spark until it heats up & then the spark quits
Comments (5)Thanks guys. I will focus on the coil shortly. I have one more weird thing that happen between the time I posted and before I read your responses. I thought the old ignition might have something to do with it so I pulled the wires and tapped on the old ignition. After I re-attached the wires, I turned the ignition key over to check for spark (I still had the plug out and checking for spark that way), the starter motor started running and would not shut off until I pulled the battery cable. It did not matter where the position of the key was in the switch. Each time I tried to re-attach the battery cable, the starter motor would kick on and stay running until I reomved the battery cable. OK. So I go out and buy a new matching 6 prong ignition and put it in. As soon as I tried to attach the battery cable, the same thing occurs - the starter motor starts running. I even pulled the wire harness off the ignition switch and then tried to hook up the battery cable - still the same problem. How can that happen if I don't even have the ignition swich hooked up? Now for the $64,000 dumb question. Is this weird starter motor problem related to the coil problem or is it just my dumb luck that something new is also wrong? Dave...See Moreericwi
