Caroline, please take these parts over to Auburn and let them tell you. I am having serious problems with noisettes this year. Since you live not far from me, we could have something going on in our area. By all means take the blackened canes and a bit of healthy cane if there is any left and take pictures, take over to Auburn and get some professional advice. That is what I am doing. This is weird that you and I are having similar problems and we live not far from each other. Some of my roses were 10 years old.

Well Caroline, I'm not sure about what's causing yours but I have a lot of that this year too.

oh no...where would I take the plant ? I think the problem in my case ., since it is with brand new planted plants that were great before I took them out of the pots, is that I put so much additives in the soil...I added Black cow and worm castings and a dose of Bayer and also cottonseed meal. The soil was too heavy and I think I just suffocated the roots as the root ball is almost all gone and it was big. My established plants are all great and have no problem. I have removed the 3 others that were in the same area as the lamarque and repotted them after cleaning off most of the soil from the rootball. I hope they will do all right as they are not nearly as far gone as this one is. Keep me posted though as I am hoping this is a circulation problem and not something else.

I had the same problem with Lamarque. Mine is coming back from the roots now though. I think the mild winter until the brutal "late winter/early spring" may have caused some damage to mine.

This is not the first posting on this subject this spring. I, too, have had an enormous amount of die back and canker this year and it seems as if many people in the eastern half of the country have, as well. I'm still assuming it is the late freeze with an otherwise mild winter, but...Mostly its hit the Chinas, Teas and HTs. It also hit my Musk Rose badly and I lost two small but established bourbons. Some Hybrid Musks have lost a lot of tip but are otherwise okay. Gallicas, portlands, damask,moss and rugosas are all fine.

I know so little about roses...I am sure it is apparent. So rather than discard plant if it all turns dark I just cut it off at ground level and the roots will come back? Also I tried to find info on taking cuttings and rooting them but it seems very confusing to me. Also since the blooms fell off I have no length of stem to take a cutting from that has recently bloomed. Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated. c

Having been the victim of severe early spring freezes several years ago, my roses had to undergo an equally severe pruning to get rid of damaged canes. Definitely cut them back about an inch below the black part. But check and see if the center of the cut area is a nice healthy white. If not, cut back more until you come to that clear white center. That well could be back to the soil line in some cases.

However, new growth will depend on the rose having a healthy root system. If the rose does not have good roots, I would start looking around for the reason--eaten off by critters? poor drainage? burned roots from multi-chemical fertilizers like Bayer (any of those all-in-one, 3-in-one, etc., products). Newly planted roses should not be fed until they have produced significant growth in their new spot.

Since you have already potted the rose, I'd guess the best you can do now is prune as I indicated above, water regularly, and keep it in semi-shade for about a month. Maybe it can be babied back to health.

Yep that is everything I did WRONG. I knew new roses should not be fed...then I did the Bayer thing. And the too heavy soil...I should be shot. Well I have learned an important lesson. LaMarque is in a new pot in the semi-shade and new soil and watered w/ rain water. She looks more and more wilty. If she will forgive me I will be forever grateful. Thank you Kate and everyone for the advice. I think new rose owners ought to have an intense "parenting" class....I am not a fit one it seems. c

Hey, Trailrunner, don't get so down on yourself. You think none of us have ever done these things? I'm new to it all, too, and I've made some dilly mistakes. Mercifully, the ones that suffered seem to be recovering somewhat, but it could have gone the other way. And people on this forum are really kind and supportive - they give any advice they can, and without being at all down-putting. Anyway, it could still turn out that the problem is not anything you've done, but something else going on, as several people have suggested.
As for parenting: have you HEARD how parents talk about raising their first baby?! They all seem to feel it was a case of "learning on the job"!!

Don't be too hard on yourself, trailrunner. We've all been there ourselves--and done some of the most incredibly dumb things you can imagine. But we are still rosing along--hopefully getting better every year! LOL

Oh you guys are so sweet. I was so down all day. I worked on lots of other stuff that needs doing but then I would stop and walk over and sigh...reach out and touch a drooping leaf and feel so bad. I wish I had bought all Gruss an achen. I have never seen such a carefree beautiful lush rose. She is in a pot by the swimming pool and couldn't be happier. I am learning so much about what I like and most important what like me !!

I am going to drive over to a house near me that has a huge pink old rose bush in the shade climbing up an old tree. I am going to ask for a bunch of clippings and try to root them. Where can I get the rooting powder that I read about here? I have lots of little black pots and glass qt jars...anything else?

Get Pink Gruss an Aachen, it is the same thing only sexier.

Rooting powder is at the garden center. Rambler roses are usually easy to root, although some cuttings will probably rot. Don't use soft new growth. You can try some in the soil in full shade, some with jars and some not. Try some in pots with a baggie over, in indirect light, soil moist, not wet.

Thank you Michael. That is what I will do. I drove by the house and the rose is huge and climbs up up in a shade tree in the yard. Not a lick of sun on it and it is beautiful. I will put it on my back fence. Should be perfect in the shade. I do have the pink Gruss an Aachen...she is so pretty and the fragrance. I just love the way the heavy blossoms bow their heads...oh I love roses. c

My Lamarque gets cane dieback, and it I cut it off, it dies back farther. It's not related to feeding or watering. Now I don't cut to the bottom of the dead parts, and it doesn't get worse. It may just be related to being Lamarque.
