Is it as John Deere 317

Recently I purchased a John Deere with an Onan engine, the engine hood says 317. my brother has one too with a kohler engine, but his has a hour meter on it mine does not. I found a John Deere 316 on YouTube.com its dash looks like my 317. (you can search youtube for "John Deere 316" (Mine looks like the second video minus the snow). I also found some 317s on ebay.com with pictures of the dash. each has more than one meter. Mine only has the amp meter no hour meter. My Question how can I find out what I have? do all 317 have hour meters are they all the same? do I have a 316 with a 317 hood? if I have a 316 where is the hour meter?

If a twin, which yours has, it should be a 317. I believe the 316 had a Kohler K341 single.

Depend on the year and S/N 316 b or p's were onans I think. I thought the 317s had vertical engine? I know replacments engines are OUTRAGOUSLY high. I would try goggling small engine warehouse and clicking on the repower window or goggling JD 317.

The original engine was a Kohler KT17,a horizontally opposed twin which is long out of production. This engine was never a favourite of mine, the early versions had a bad habit of chucking connecting rods. J-D offered a kit, may be still available, to install a Briggs and Stratton 18 hp Vanguard V-twin. It is not a cheap conversion but if the tractor is in good shape it might be worth considering. Other than the engine, the KT17 was a fine machine.

Update, okay I managed to talk him up to a JD 320, (well, that is after he talked to one of his friends.) Any input on the 320? I can't believe I have to talk a man into a bigger machine.

John Deere vs Cub Cadet

I have worked at a lawn mower shop for several years. We've sold both cub cadet and John Deere. This is what I can tell you. John deere's quality has had a big drop, just like everything nowadays. one of the best mowers you can buy for the money is a cub cadet ltx 1042kw. It has a good Kawasaki engine and hydrostatic drive. If you get it from a dealer and not farm supply etc. you get a free front bumper to protect your hood when it's on the trailer or just mowing. Hoods can get over 500 dollars. John Deere about 5 years ago, was the brand I would recommend. But, now I'm afraid nothing runs like a cub. If you can spend more money on a mower, I would recommend a zforce s 48 inch. It is a true zero turn with a steering wheel. The front wheels turn like a normal mower, and the back ones spin like a stick zero turn. Just driving it is very convincing, it is very agile. It runs so smooth and is very nice to ride with the pivoting front axle. How many yards are flat like the floor of a showroom. Just my opinions of driving and working on both of them, hope I helped. Oh, if you mow several yards or a lot of land, check out the commercial line, the highest quality you can get besides a hustler. But without the 10000 dollar price tag.

It likely has the Kohler KT17 which is no longer available.The Command 18 V-twin may fit but will need some fabrication.Yetmans bought the remaining stock of KT17 engines from J-D and may have some left. Here is a link that might be useful: YETMANS

The 317s had Kohler engines, although some were upgraded by JD Dealers with an Onan replacement. 316s did not come with an hour meter, though it was a dealer installed option. If it has an hour meter, it's on the side of the pedestal, under the hood. Also, there were closed frame 316s that had Kohler engines. Later, Deere reintroduced the 316 with an open frame and an Onan twin. Do you have a serial number plate on your tractor? Take a look and post the first six or seven digits.
