Question about Graham Thomas
Comments (9)You know, I just have to say -- GT was "OK" for us, but for Southern California, I VASTLY prefer 'Golden Celebration.' For us, it's a prettier plant, big and broad, but not a climber. It blooms more than GT EVER did for us. It's got a great vase life, and the fragrance is so strong, we've had people stop their cars and ask what it is. We have 5-6 of it in a row, creating a privacy hedge for our bedroom window, so when you're inside the room, looking out, you look right into the plants. Jeri...See Moreweed under Graham Thomas?
Comments (13)Yes, it clashes with Graham. However, not all yellow mustards are non-native and weeds (in the sense of being non-native; I've met many natives who are, essentially, weeds -- don't talk to me about Aster chilensis!). For example, Barbarea orthoceras (winter cress), a medium-sized yellow mustard, is all over a job site in San Mateo I was at today and it is a native. All of the genus Brassica (also yellow) is non-native and was mostly introduced by the Forest Services during the 1950s to fight erosion after forest fires (not a good idea and did not work, as most post-fire seeding doesn't). There are many yellow mustard species, both native and non-native. You generally need the seed-pods (fruits) to nail down IDs in the family Brassicaceae. Yours looks sort of like a Brassica, Jackie, but I couldn't say for sure unless I saw the fruit and more of the plant. Debbie...See MoreQuestion About Graham Thomas
Comments (11)I have grown a few Austins in my time and one thing I learned here on the Rose discussion is to not over do it with it comes to pruning (unless they are rampant with no blooms). Graham Thomas is one who needs some room to look really good and flower alot. I believe that without too much attention to pruning other than dead heading, the plant tends to be much happier. Pat Austin, Mary Rose, and Scepter'd Isle all did way better this season with less attention from me. They look more graceful and are quite floriferous. I could also guess that the bigger the plant is, it will shade the ground better. I handwatered more often those plants that don't have the soaker hose under them and it made a difference in their overall health....See MoreBe careful what you wish for...Graham Thomas vs clematis
