Replacing starter on my Craftsman - where are the bolts hiding?

The starter on my Craftsman LT 3000 didn't make it through the winter. It spins freely when the key is turned, yet will not engage the flywheel. I want to remove and repair the starter. However, I don't know how to get to the bolts that hold it in place. The parts diagram in the owner's manual is not clear on this.

I think the bolts are hidden beneath the plastic engine cowling. I'm hoping somone can confirm this before I remove it. There are two star-bolts in front that I would have to purchase a bit for if that is the case.

The mower part number is Sears 917.276813. It is powered by a 21 HP Briggs single-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transaxle.

My guess is that moisture somehow got into the starter. There was a tuft of grass wedged between the starter and engine; that could have been the "somehow".. The "Bendix spring" - or whatever mechanism is used to push the starter gear into the flywheel - got rusted as a result.

Any ideas on how to get this starter off would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Marco
