spark plug fell out of engine
Comments (3)zingy, Spark plugs don't just "fall out". Over time, and with previous plug changes, the plug's been (most likely) cross-threaded and the threads are now gone. You can repair the head by REPLACING IT, or using a product called HELI-COIL. HeliCoil is available from most auto parts stores. You ream out the old threads and add "new" threads using this product. Either way....will prevent the plug from coming out again. If the plug WILL TIGHTEN UP....it should NOT come out. If it does...threads are damaged. Comments (2)Obviously, it is "turning over" if it "will run for a couple of seconds". You really mean to say (I think) "It will not start and stay running". Possibility #1: If the engine has not used for a while (sitting in storage) the carburetor jets may have become clogged by the varnish that forms when gasoline is allowed to go stale and evaporate over time. Possibility # 2: The carburetor float valve is stuck to it's valve seat and will not allow fuel to enter the carburetor (also due to varnish). Possibilty # 3: If the carburetor has a "Fuel cutoff solenoid", the solenoid plunger valve has become stuck (varnish) and cannot open to allow fuel to the main jet. Possibility # 4: If the machine uses a fuel pump to move fuel to the carb (used if fuel tank is lower than carb....and that covers a lot of machines), the fuel pump may have gone bad during the storage period. Possibilty # 5: Does the machine have a fuel cutoff valve that you have not opened?...See MoreJumping no longer turns over mower engine
Comments (5)As said above, voltage is only part of the story. With a GOOD set of battery cables, jump from a known good battery directly to your starter. IF it works now, you know the problem is back up stream. Now try the same thing from the tractor battery. IF it works now, problem is wiring, cables. IF not in either instance, Starter or - - -you didn't post model number of engine. Walt Conner...See MoreDid changing my spark plug break my engine?
Comments (0)Uh oh :-( I needed a new air filter for my Murray riding mower (Briggs & Straton engine), so I got a mower tune up kit on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MLJY2V7/ I also bought a new fuel line. I have no clue where the oil filter is on this engine, but I changed everything else yesterday, no problem. Today I go out to use the mower, and it doesn't start. It turns but doesn't catch... so, spark plug, right? I pull out the new spark plug and see that the threads have gas on them, and the side electrode is pushed up against the center electrode and kinda slipped off the side. As if they were mashed together. Then I see dripping coming from underneath the motor. Gas!!! I checked the fuel line everywhere and it's dry as a bone, so it's definitely coming from somewhere under the engine cover. Uh oh. I pulled out the old spark plug, and I see that the threads on the new one are quite a bit longer than the old one, so when I screwed it in I guess I went about 1/4" (or more) deeper than the original, ran it in to whatever's behind the spark plug, and didn't know it so I just screwed it on it until it stopped. FWIW, I've always changed spark plugs the same way: screw it in until it's snug, then give it about 1/4 turn to tighten it in. I ran out of daylight so I couldn't look any further, but... have I busted my engine by changing the spark plug? :-O...See Morekossio95
