Rose/Gardening Novice

Below is a photo of my rose tree. It is my first Rose tree and I got it Easter 08. It bloomed some last year and I thought that all I should do is just pull off the dead flowers. I see now from the way it looks that I should have pruned at some point. Now I don't know how far to cut back, which branches to cut, when to do it (now vs. after the summer). I know nothing about roses, a complete novice, so if anybody could advise me so that I don't damage or kill my rose I would be so grateful. Any help is appreciated. Sincerely, Michelle

Wherre in Florida do you live?

Do you know where the tree was bought from and what the name of the rose is?

Your rose tree looks like a Hybrid Tea rose. It should have been pruned hard/cut down once a year. Not sure when the correct time to prune is in florida - my best guess would be at the end of january (But I am sure other people here on the forum from florida, can give you the correct time.

I would prune it hard now/make cuts with a secateur above abudeye (looks like a line with a little hump on the cane) in the locations I have marked with red lines:

Give it some fertilizer and it will start blooming in about 8 weeks from now. When the roses are spent cut the canes a LITTLE back again.

Next Year I will prune it a little less to build up a better cane structure - cutting about 2-3 budeyes above the cuts made this year.

That is how I would do it - you are going to loose the first flush of flowers, but it will bloom this year anyway, and get a better shape.

I think you have some brambles in the back there, Lizzie. You need to get them out of there . They're about to flower and they'll overtake that bed if you leave them.

1. the lumpy things are called "bud unions" if the plants are grafted. Cut off any stem that is dead. You can determine if a stem is dead if it is brown or black on the outside and also brown or black in cross-section. make a fresh cut and look. A living cane will be white or tan inside, with a thin green ring just inside the bark. The roses you describe sound old. You may be able to revive them or you may not. Regular water and some good fertilizer may help the rose grow new stems. 2. What did you fertilize with? How much water are they getting? Old neglected plants often don't have the vigor of young well cared for plants. Compare the energy level of a puppy with an old dog. 3. do just what you are doing. Just wash off the bugs. 4. just pick off the rusty leaves. the systemic stuff doesn't work very well. As soon as warmer weather hits, that rust will be gone. Good luck!

That's a beauty and I'm sure it can be relocated. They are very hardy. I don't know when the best time to move it would be for your zone. Probably not while it's the heat of Summer, but I would ask a local garden center. Rose of Sharon tend to like to get big. The way I prune mine is probably incorrect, but I hard prune it in late winter when the shrub is bare. That way I can really see all the branches. I basically sheer mine straight off about a foot shorter than what I want it to be. When it leafs out, it grows about a foot. I like mine to grow fairly upright and columnar, so I cut any branches that are growing out too far sideways and keep the more vertical ones.

Hi Lindsay. I live in Michigan USDA Zone 6. You won't be able to use above ground planters as most perennials will suffer badly from the freeze if not completely die. That said, plants will grow around broken glass, etc. as long as the soil itself is decent. I suggest you pay a couple guys from a high school football team come and dig out a large trench along the fence to bury narrow horse trough planters. They don't have to be brand new [the planters not the guys] https://www.pinterest.com/pin/154952043399694610/ Fill the planters or trench with garden soil--not top soil. I just re-landscaped an older home in Pontiac MI and aimed for low maintenance perennials like hostas, daylilies and coral bells mass planted in groups of 3. Look for reblooming daylilies which will add massive color with little work. https://www.oakesdaylilies.com/. Daylilies love Epsom salts. You might want to add height with pillar form shrubs with color like Orange Rocket Barberry or that flowers/berries. Maybe hollies? Talk to your local nursery about what they have unless you want to buy online. Roses require a great deal of time and attention and chemicals especially if the Japanese beetles find them. I had to pull out a 12 bush beds of roses due to beetles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_beetle Clematis would be very beautiful, but can make maintenance of the fence difficult and they grow slowly. If you have little ones consider whether the flowers will draw stinging insects. I really like but didn't have much luck with micro clover. Died after the 1st year.

Subtropical roses can be pruned at any time. In my opinion, Cup's pruning is a little too severe to be optimal; I think you would get more shoots and bushiness if the average cane length left is 16-18", especially those relatively horizontal canes that should produce several shoots. But otherwise, I would do exactly as Cup says. Shape you plant throughout the year by cutting back excessively long shoots after flowering.

Now Michael - do remember where I come from and that the viking blood running through my veins, may make me a bit of an axe- and sword-swinging brute! :-)

I do grow a Hybrid Tea Rose tree (Ingrid Bergmann) and due to yet another record warm and mild winter it survived very well. Here are 2 pictures showing the crown of the rosetree after having the luxury of being able to actually shape it (I am pretty satisfied with the result - since it is hard to shape a HT Rosetree - they simply do not grow as gracefully as some polyanthas, Old Garden Roses or Austins - or even better some climbers grown as tall rosetrees (We call those weeping standards). I think it is best to shape the rose by pruning hard now and then build up a cane structure that allow more flowers to be produced on many shorter laterals than at the end of of few taller laterals.

In Florida hybrid tea roses should NEVER be hard pruned to the degree they would be in a more northern state. You can lose the rose doing that. The rule of thumb is between one third and one half, never more than by half. In Central Florida the optimal pruning time is around valentine's Day, south Florida would be before then. I would check with a local rose society person that is familiar with hybrid teas as to optimal spring pruning time in your area. I'm guessing it is in January sometime.

I think you could cut your rose back a little bit, but I wouldn't take more than 12 inches off this late in the season.
