Rising Sun and Burgandy Hearts Redbuds

Does anyone in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area has a Rising Sun and/or Burgandy Hearts Redbuds in their yard? I have been reading a lot on these two trees and I am considering buying one of each; however, I'm wondering if they do well in our alkaline soil and Texas heat. My understanding is that redbuds don't do well in full sun.

i am surely not in TX ... MI in fact ....

but they are an UNDERSTORY tree.. that TOLERATES shade ..

in MI.. they do just fine in full sun ... and grow very fast in sun ... once FULLY established ... [all tree transplants need water TLC for about 2 years]

that would be the plain old green ones ...

others will have to discuss your off color ones.. in TX

You've been to Metro Maples, haven't you? They happen to have both of them. According to MM, they do best with morning sun/dabbled sun. Avoid full afternoon sun.

Traveller's would be best for sunny condition if you want a weeping redbud. I've seen them at several nurseries but I forget which one.

I have had Rising Sun for two growing seasons now. The first year, the leaves burned in full sun and it looked like crap the last few months of the growing season with a very bright yellow on the one healthy leaf left by the time peak fall color rolled around. This spring it was loaded with flowers. The leaves this summer are a very deep/dark green with the new leaves showing the characteristic apricot to yellow to green progression with no burning. Looks like it will be a fine addition to the landscape =) I lost a Forest Pansy this spring in a storm. I let it sprout from the base but only the root stock has sent up suckers unfortunately. It was the third growing season in my yard and was very pretty for a month or two in spring while the leaves were emerging and enlarging but not much to look at after that. I did not witness very good fall color but the two growing seasons it had in my yard were harsh to put it very mildly. I am strongly contemplating Merlot as its replacement. It seems to be very hard (impossible) to find a small decently priced Merlot. I would link to my Rising Sun topic but I remember you commented on it recently so...

Some things to keep in mind: sunlight reaching the ground is not the same as the amount of sun on the top of the Redbud. Think of the taller trees as an umbrella. You can stand with your feet in the sun but your head in the shade. Another concern is that as an understory tree, that can mean a lopsided form. If you are thinking of the Redbud as an evenly branched symmetrical tree, and any other form is 'ugly', then it may fail your test. The reason is that these trees (Redbuds) are very good at growing next to taller trees, but they become horizontal trees with long branches on the sunnier side and shorter, fewer branches on the shady side. Crecis have an odd branching pattern to begin with. If you can live with a crooked tree, then by all means plant it where it is going to show off the cool spring color. My Forest Pansy is 6’ tall. He has been in my yard 2 years. Has bloomed the first 2years!! This year nothing! My heart is aching. I’ve started my yard in fall of 2020. Planted over 200 trees & scrubs. Redbuds are my favorite. Last year I added 2 more 7footers!!! They are very pretty & bloomed & now both of them & 1 from my original plantings in 2020 are full of beautiful burgundy leaves. But just this 1 tree is just setting there. His base has limbs that have come up out of the ground & they are leaves out!! But the tree is just there. It looks very dead! Could it of died? Did I do something wrong? My front yard is almost 4acres, I work sooo hard to keep everything alive & growing great. What’s wrong with my tree?

Loss of Red bud/ last year i purchase a beautiful tree. It had slight damage about a foot up the trunk, when i bought it. It grew beautifully and displayed flowerd in the spring that were beautiful. I was delighted as it was thr memorail tree i purchaed to remember my sister who died last year. A few weeks ago, with just a slight wind, the tree was felled. It was so upsetting to see that beautiful tree on the ground, with it’s heart shaped flowers acting as if nothing happened. They did not shrivel up even three days later. I tried in vain to figure out how to raise the tree and tape or somehow attach the trunk back. In the end i had no choice but ti cut the tree below the damaged trunk. It is now growing little branches, one week later. Will this grow into tree or a bush? Does anyone know how i would care for this tree? I would like to save it.

You might give 'Merlot' redbud a google search. It should do considerably better in your climate than many c. canadensis cultivars.

when dealing with anything with OTHER THAN GREEN leaves...

the fallback is always.. afternoon shade ..

and if they would simply say it this way.. it would be so much easier to understand:

leaves other than green require shade.. because they sunburn ... so the pf lotion to not sunburn.. is to get them shade in the afternoon..

this is also complicated by not being able to pump enough water in the high heat of the day making them sunburn faster .. and shade helps water movement within the plant ... and water management in the soil ...

make sense???

and the high heat of the day.. is when the heat is high.. not necessarily noon ... [of course you are TX.. its probably blistering at dawn.. lol] ....

Ken, your generalization is not necessarily true with 'Merlot'. It is touted as full sun and was in a McAlester botanic garden video brandon7 posted some time ago in full sun doing quite well (it had a fantastic growth spurt on the current season growth if I recall correctly). I will see if I can find it later...

ps - caltex, check out the whole video for some choices that are doing well in very similar growing conditions to you :) (McAlester, OK is a very similar climate to DFW)

Most the purple (if thats what you want to call it) require closer to full sun to help bring out a more rich color.

Not familiar with the varieties mentioned, but we typically plant ~100 Redbuds yearly, either standard or Tx. Redbud at Gov/t facilities at Killeen, Tx. They are actually very heat and drought resistant. Have had them survive when standard oaks, elms, etc. die. They are planted in full brutal Tx. Z8 sun. Particularly like them for the small parking lot islands.
This surprised me when I first moved out here because I considered them an understory tree that needed protection and moist conditions.

==>> SEE!!!! .. that is what i was talking about.. maybe?? .. lol .. making presumptions ... its perhaps.. NOT that they NEED it.. but they tolerate it ... which is which ...

and MANY times soil under a high canopy.. can be very very dry ... the large trees super competing for available water ...

just dont make presumptions ...

and do note.. NO transplant is drought proof.. until it is fully established.. and depending on the size planted.. it will require at least a couple year of PROPER WATERING ... from the planter ...
