Effective Cover- Up for Ugly Cinder Block Bases

arbo_retum

Throughout our gardens we have displayed many sculptures and urns. Being surrounded by dense plantings that include many conifers and shrubs, these ornaments often need to have greater height to achieve a satisfactory aesthetic. As a result,we often place them on columns or pedestals that are themselves on top of cinder block bases (or 'risers'). To hide these ugly cinder blocks, our solution is to skirt them with hellebores. Here in Z.5, Hellebore Niger and Orientalis are evergreen and also among the first plants to leaf out in spring. Even after the fading of their beautiful March/April/May blooms, their dark green glossy mass forms an opaque screen of the cinder blocks throughout the year.

best,

Mindy
