Brown edges on my heucherella 'Citronelle'

I have had this both in full sun and part shade. In both instances, the edges of the leaves have turned brown and the plant diminished instead of grew. Any ideas. I divided one up and will plan to try it in deep shade if any of the divisions make it. Is anyone else having this problem with this plant?

MOst of the yellower ones like more shade...What exposure does it get and how moist is the ground? One thing I've noticed is that if you have sandy soil or dryer areas it can struggle a bit. I also know that I've had trouble with a couple of the white spotted ones, but never with Key Lime. GOod luck...

Most of my tiarellas and the heucherellas take a lot more moisture than heucheras...Sorry, I was on a heuchera binge in the previous post. I actually have my best luck with them in partial shade right near the hose faucet so they get splashed. My others like it near my pond where I give them a splash of water whenever I walk by. My guess is that citronelle is more like the tiarella parentage rather than the heuchera. Try giving it some more to drink.

TN sent me a few varieties to trial this summer, but the delivery guy left them on the sunny side of my house instead of the shade! I received the plants only a few days before I went on vacation for 12 days! Nonetheless, the tiny plugs are all well and happy in spite of the early abuse and neglect. I've just plunked them in the same bed with pulmonaria, ferns, hydrangeas and pieris -- since I was in a hurry due to my trip. Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' Heuchera 'Midnight Bayou' Heuchera 'Shanghai' Tiarella 'Happy Trails' When I get the time and the weather isn't so hot and humid, I'll try to work them into a real design situation. That said, all except for 'Sweet Tea' (a soft apricot-rust color) look great with the pink tinge of the Japanese Painted Fern, the silver-green leaves of pulmonaria 'Silver Bouquet' and purple foliage of Persian Shield.

I bought a couple of the newest heuchera this year, Berrie Smoothie and Electra. They seem to be doing very well, bought them basically plug size, but have grown twice in size since planting them. Electra isn't as bright as I thought it would be, but it's still quite young, while Berrie Smoothie has nice colored foliage, though not as fruity as the Terra Nova picture has it looking. Can't wait until they, and my other new ones, become mature. And, heucherella 'Sweet Tea' is on my list of yet to get. Karen

I've been fighting this battle with rabbits for a long time. One winter they gnawed my fothergilla shrubs almost to the ground, as well as the deutzias. And I have quite a few hostas, and some clematis, so it was really frustrating. Yes, I agree, all those little cages around the plants detracts from their beauty and make it harder to tend them, pull weeds, etc. - I tried that, too. And, those spray-on or sprinkle-on "deterrents" are like salad dressing to the critters - I've spent a small fortune on them. FWIW, my yard is fenced. The back edge of the property is a wood privacy fence, and everywhere there was a little gap at the bottom I wedged-in large rocks to obstruct the rabbits' entry. The sides of the yard have a black metal fencing (wrought-iron appearance), and they could hop right through it. So, I purchased black chicken wire (had to order it online, since the stores only carry silver). I fastened the chicken wire to the inside of the metal fencing - the whole length. I had to fasten it pretty tightly at the bottom, and in some places I have pushed it down and buried the edge in the soil or covered it with rock to secure. The chicken wire blends so well with the black metal fence that it's barely noticeable, and in many places the shrubs and perennials are tall enough to screen it during growing season. This SEEMS to have solved the problem. However, our neighborhood also has seen a resurgence of foxes, coyotes, hawks and even owls recently (I love them all!)... so I don't know where to give credit, but the rabbit population seems to be down generally. All that in spite of a neighbor with an excessive number of bird-feeders in her yard - the fallen seed attracts all kinds of rodents. So, if you're able to do something similar, it is a pretty good solution. I think barriers are really the only solution. Good luck!

Are you sure they are Heucherella's? I grow the Hairy Alumroot, Heuchera villosa 'Citronelle' (PPAF), which is a sport of Heuchera villosa 'Caramel' (PP16560), both from France, along with other H. villosa cultivars; 'Brownies', 'Mocha' & soon to be released; 'Miracle'
H. villosa is an Eastern N American native, Z4(3) to Z7, and grows primarily on rocky, wooded slopes and rock outcroppings, in rich, moist, well drained soil, usually in shade to partial shade.Can survive periods of drought, once established.
I grow several of each of the H. villosa cultivars; 'Citronelle','Caramel' & 'Mocha', in full or dappled summer shade, in well drained soil(slightly acidic) and have not experienced any leaf discoloration on any of them. At the U of GA Trial Gardens in Athens, GA, some of the photos of H. villosa cultivars exhibit severe leaf scorching, when subjected to long periods of direct sunlight.

You're right razorback, it is a heuchera. I lost the label and the plant I am losing didn't seem to mound so I assumed it was a heucherella. Thanks. If any part of what I have left survives, it's going into the shade garden with adequate moisture and drainage.
