Has Anybody Grown Malabar 'Spinach'?
Comments (10)Another spinach substitute is Perpetual Spinach, a.k.a. Leaf Beets. It's a kind of chard, not related to spinach at all, but it looks more like spinach (smooth dark green leaves, thin stem). It produces all summer long. It's a fantastic green. Fedco Seeds' description: Perpetual Spinach or Leaf Beet (55 days) Open-pollinated. Thanks to Pam Dawling who suggested we add this member of the chard family. Leaf beet should be cultured like any other chard variety. It looks similar to other swiss chards, but its stems are thinner, and its exceptionally tender leaves are smoother, not puckered. It tastes unlike any other chard, imparting a spinach-like flavor that lingers pleasantly. Unlike spinach, Perpetual lasts through summer into fall as it withstands light and moderate frosts. Production from June to October, reports one central Vermont grower. Dawling calls it a 'must-grow.' Comments (12)I used to grow mine in the window when I lived in a colder area to get them started early in the season. You can also use curtain tension rods placed vertically in the window for them to twine around. That way you can pretty much grow them anywhere in the window or place them on both sides vertically, and with some tension rods also placed horizonatlly top and bottom, they can grow all around the inside of the windowsill~this can look very pretty. You can also grow moonflowers that way which will open up at night and release fragrance. ~SJN...See Moremerits of Nahema vs Scepter'd Isle
Comments (22)That's such great news Ken because I have one on Fort that got hit by some sort of weed killer that my lawn guy put down and it was stunted for an entire year. It is now shaking it off and finally starting to grow strong. I worry that I put it in a place that doesn't get enough sun, but its hard to tell since it had that problem with the weed killer. I'm leaving it alone for now because I fear a move right now would do it in. If it doesnt recover by the fall however, I will consider moving it to a better location. Right now I have 3 Austins in a sunnier spot that are performing admirably. Particularly Pat Austin that blooms its head off and has gotten to be about 7 feet tall....See MoreNahema, balling?
Comments (17)Farmerduck- Your Heritage is stunning as are your other roses. I also will be getting a couple more of her. I move her too many times and now she's struggling. Thanks for the info on Ascot which I'm considering getting next spring from Palatine. How is she for black spot? I don't spray so hoping she's good fro disease resistance. I just bought two Nahema's from Reverence for Roses. They're a bit sad looking since they shipped from Florida in the heat but they seem to be recovering nicely and are putting out some new growth. I hope she's as lovely as those who grow her say she is. Sharon...See Moresusan4952
