New GH Old Window/Doors

Check out my greenhouse DH and I built using free old doors and windows. I know there was an earlier thread on this subject, somewhere. The greenhouse is a 6x7 lean-to. It has vents at the top on both ends. It gets a good amount of light. I live in zone 7 and plan only to use it to over winter deck plants and maybe get a start on Spring things. Our County Extension service says overheating is more of a problem for greenhouses in our area, so I'm not to concerned with the heating. I plan to use a electric oil heater the worst months (Dec-Feb) and I think the dark brick wall will help. On the other thread someone posted that some of the recycled GHs there looked like hovels from 3rd world countries. I think ours is a step above that. We still have to put in the shelves. I like it a lot. You guys did a very good job. I have access to 10 windows 30x30 with screens etc. I can prob get them for about $30-$40 total. Now all I have to do is talk my husband into it. I think he was afraid it would look junky made from old windows. But I have seen too many really nice examples. Yours is one.
He wants a shed out back for lawn mowers etc, I have invisioned an attached greenhouse, shaped like yours,door on the front,stone pathway, and plants in front in nice big bed.

very nice looking. I considered building one from windows and sliding glass doors when I first looked into getting a GH, DH talked me out of it (since he was not going to help build it, I guess he figured it would be one of those 3rd world looking huts and that our neighbors would report us). SO, instead I got a HFGH 10 x 12 which I LOVE..but I'd really be proud of something that I built!! so congrats.

Not a shill and I could actually careless what people buy or use, and I haven't sold a wood window in years. I don't shuffle, and I am not going anywhere sorry to say. I just try and offer help and potential advice. I stated no offense to you but since you retorted. You come on here and blame the windows 100% and slam Marvin (could be any brand doesn't matter) yet offer no info on the age of the windows or how they are installed. You state PERFECTLY maintained but we have to accept your word on that. Does wood wick water thru end grain, yeah. Does it do it frequently yes it can. Are they ways and steps to minimize this, yes there are and in my opinion if you are having this issue repetitively and with all your windows they are not or could not be perfectly maintained. We had a related problem trying to match gumwood to pine window casings. Because different woods absorb stain differently and have different color undertones you may need to have different stains for the two kinds of woods to make them seen the same. One might be cooler or warmer than the other. You will probably have to do some custom mixing from among the ready-made stains, and try them out on scraps of the wood you're planning to use. Remember also that whatever you put on at the end to seal or finish the wood may make it warmer or more amber in color.

mimalf - When I introduced myself on the thread called "Caught the Hoya bug" about a month ago, I put a picture of my new GH with my new 40 plants - much like yours. That might be the thread you are thinking of that had the greenhouse. I live in very high humidity (Juneau Aalska) but rather liked how it held the heat in. All I did was heavy mist every morning and later in the day I opened the door for 20 minutes so air moved - then a heavy misting again. Jan recommended this - and my plants are doing well. I am leaving the door open now for about 3 hours everyday. This has worked great for me. Love how it looks! Robin
