cranking problem john deere lt155

I have to pour gas thru the breather to crank it & then it lugs when it is running, any suggestions?

Maybe you could be a bit more descriptive. It sounds like it cranks over well, but doesn't seem to be getting enough fuel to start. That part may just be a simple choke adjustment. The plate has to close all the way over to be effective. Fuel needs to be new also. Then once started -does it surge or just have low power? Will it continue to run?

it surges & yes it continues to run. I have run some seafoam thru it to try & clean the carb out but that has not worked either. How do you adjust the choke or could there be something in the carb that is stuck?

Can you detect a click from the solenoid below the carb when you turn the key to on? If not, check for another chewed wire and a blown fuse. Has the machine been run at all this spring? If you unhook the kill wire will it run? Was the engine run w/ the mouse nest?

A fairly common thing on these are that the engine mounting bolts drop out, the engine shifts and melts the harness on the back corner of the engine. Eventually the muffler stresses and breaks too. A funky seat switch may come into play here as well as an improperly adjusted choke, a carb that needs service etc.

I would think a pump would be needed on this. These pull fuel from the top of the tank if i recall correctly. So, I assume that all is on the block is the cast boss and no little steel cover? 12 volt pumps are available from auto part stores. To my knowledge, Kohler doesn't publish a pressure spec on the mechanical pump. What is too much pressure, I couldn't say. The Walbro pump I have on the shelf is a min 4.7# pump.

Could be one or more interlocks. My first choice would be the ignition switch (key). Sounds like intermittent contact. Second choice would be the solenoid. Do you know how to jump the solenoid? This would help you focus on whether either part is the culprit. To jump the solenoid, you need to put +12v to the third wire (the smaller connection). Solenoid should click and start cranking motor.

You could try removing the carb bowl and giving it a quick clean, flush some fuel out of the end of the fuel line to know what you are getting is clean fuel. The choke plate linkage is adjustable, but many times it is out because the control cable moved some. You will need either to physically see the plate closed or feel the shaft that it is completely closed.
