2 bareroot roses show no life after 6 weeks

Hi. I planted two bareroot roses about 6 weeks ago. Didn't know about soaking, so I just planted them (one in pot, one in flowerbed) normally and watered well. I have kept them watered every day or every other day. However, there is no green showing on the canes and no leafing on either plant. I am so disappointed. Are they goners or should I keep this up a while longer? Thanks for any advice.

WEll, it doesn't sound good, but what do the canes look like?
Are they plump and green? If you cut off a small amount at the top of a cane, is the pith clean and bright white?

Or do they just look brown and dead?

If they are dead, having never broken dormancy, I would most certainly take them back to the nursery from which they came (or contact the mailorder vendor, if that was the case).

If they came from a local retail establishment, once they are dead for sure, I would pull them up and take them back to the retailer to demonstrate why you need a refund.

if you say there is no green CANES not leaves than sorry to say they're dead. brown canes for bareroot is baaaad news. did you cover over the bottom of the rose with dirt up a few inches and mulch right after you planted? if you didn't it will still dryout even with the watering. the wind does it...sorry.

This late in the season, I would strongly discourage you from mounding your plants with soil (especially when considering the atypical weather patterns in your area this year, plus the length of time the plants have already been in your garden). Your question about how long to wait deserves an answer, so I venture to offer this: If you've seen no signs of life by the summer solstice (that's 2 wks + 1 day from now), it's a virtual certainty that your BPIs are goners. That gives them a full month in your garden -- and that's a full month under conditions that were less than ideal to begin with, and are becoming less hospitable with each passing day. What was the source of your bareroots? Were they shipped to you by a recognized supplier, or did you purchase them locally? Whatever the case, if they don't break dormancy very soon, I feel you have grounds to request a refund. I hope you'll keep us posted. We're wishing you good luck with those two . . .

Hi Connie, Enjoyed the update. Now for my 2 cents! Agree taking the roses out of the "pot prison" as Robert so aptly put it does wonders for them. I have moved over 50 roses during the heat of the summer to NY and have not lost a one yet. Furthermore, some are blooming more than they were down here. Of course, winter will determine my success/fail rate since the ground is low lying and and the water table high. My experience is that grass is a pain; not only to mow but more so to keep it from creeping into the flower beds and Bermuda grass can be a demon. I love white clover in the lawn but it sure goes for those mulched beds. We had a graveled circular driveway when we moved here which BADLY needed replenishing. After 5 years of driving on it, it needs a new coat. One thing I like about the gravel it does keep the weeds out if thick enough. Frankly I LOVE the look of gravel paths where plants from the perennial beds informally spill over into it giving it an irregular edging, a very English estate/cottagey look. LOVE IT! One nice thing, seeds like to germinate in it. I had a load of johnny jump ups in adjacent beds. Few seeds germinated in the mulched beds but oh they loved the adjacent gravel driveway. I had a spring bed 2x6 ft of jju's in the driveway this spring and loved it( admittedly the gravel wasn't too thick there. I just dug up and repotted 2 japanese maples, 2 southern wax myrtle, and 2 service berry which had sprouted under a telephone wire; gifts of the birds. In NY, we had used wood chips in our woodland garden front yard. It worked but had to be renewed every year since the wood chips got broken down and enriched the earth. When we had the gravel delivered, the man was an artist. He was so skilled that he tipped the back of the truck and drove so skillfully that the gravel poured out in wide level sweeps instead of dumping it in one huge pile for us to rake. When he was done, the driveway was freshly graveled and all leveled out as if it had been hand raked. Looked lovely and no work. Laying out the paths with a wheelbarrow will be a lot of work. If some one can do it with a small dumpster it would be worth it. CLUMPING LIRIOPE would be good or select varieties of Hosta. Your idea of drip irrigation is wonderful. When I lived in southern VA for a year, a man sold potted chrysanthemums in the fall. He had laid down rolls of plasic to control weeds and had a dripper going to each pot. It saved a lot of work and his plants were vigorous and beautiful. Last thought; you might try several methods (gravel,wood chips, etc.) in your furthest corner of the bed and see which works best for you. Jim

Annie, you are so close! You can do it! Outside, do you have any more organized runs or races coming up? Maybe the weather is not conducive to it now, though? Lyfia, I am glad to hear you're on the road to recovery! This has to be the worst part, though . . .the waiting! How much longer with the cast? I bet you will be back in no time since you are putting effort into the recovery, which many do not do. Interesting about the team motivation. I am the opposite! I am not competitive and don't like disappointing others, so I prefer to do it alone. Kiki, how did your return go? That is quite a list of changes! A huge congrats to finding and sticking to what works. That is really amazing! Oh, Beth! There isn't a thing wrong with vodka and bologna. My only thing would be not to think of starting/stopping. Think of how you can make permanent changes that you do not want to stop. A real lifestyle change. If that means taking a few weeks off of the gym, then that is OK. Vodka for bed? Fine. But make that be your plan, not a stop. You have to make this so easy and right for you that it works and you are constantly succeeding (or 90%, as we've been told here). If I had to go to the gym to work out, I would fail. I think it would actually be cheaper for me to go in the long run, but I could not do it because it's too complicated. If I had to use the treadmill, I'd fail. I've tried and it's so boring. Things that work for others would not work for me. It's so individual and personal-- different for everyone. If I had to work on what I eat, I'd fail. During these weeks, I briefly tried to improve my diet, and you know what? Totally made me eat worse. I have been OK with how I eat for years, and I do not want to mess with that. What works for me is my set time (morning), easy place (basement), and am making sure I add a lot of challenge and variety to my workouts (love the kettlebell and just got heavier hand weights), it is great. I didn't know that if things got too easy, it actually got BORING. I thought I needed to be perfect to move on, but no. Thanks, everyone, for commenting. Is this your first trip to Paris and or London? If you have three weeks, I would certainly plan to do more than Paris, especially if I had not been to Europe before and was not a frequent traveller ... you can do a lot comfortably in three weeks. Let me start off by saying though, I really would not go to Paris in April. My first trip as a "grown up" was April in Paris, and I just assumed it was a good time ago (isn't there a famous song?). The song is probably just because the guy needed two syllables. April in Paris is usually cold and rainy. I have been there a dozen times on business and 4 times for pleasure, and I much prefer June or September. I totally understand the spring break timing. I am confronted with that every year too ... it seems you either go skiiing, go to the beach, or you have to go somewhere off season. Drives me crazy. But I truly believe April is suboptimal, and I had to say that upfront. One of the best things about Paris is just strolling about, and it is much nicer if it is green and pleasant. If this is a once in a lifetime trip, I'd do it in June. One of my favorite places in the world is the Bagatelle, a small tulip garden in the Bois du Bologne. In April it will be barren. So will Giverny, a great day trip to Monet's home. Okay so I have said my piece on that and will desist! The Georges V on the right bank is steps from the Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elyssees. Over the years it had been flagged as a few different brands, but it is currently a Four Seasons. I tended to stay there on business, and while it is excellent, it is not my first choice for leisure. I don't really like the Champs Elysee ... it has large, modern stores on that section .. and I would much rather be based on the left bank for leisure. My fave is La Lutetia, but I just looked it up and it is closed for renovations. I also like the Hotel Montalambert and Relais Christine, both left bank. Do note that both cities are very pricey as I am sure you know. Moreover, unlike American brands, rooms are typically very very small and often cannot accommodate a third person. Lastly, try to be very specific about the actual room and get photos. Many hotels are in older buildings and the rooms are anything but cookie cutter. One person can have a fabulous charming room and the other a dump. But in my mind it feels much more Parisian to stay in an old building! So keep that in mind when looking into alternates. As far as an itinerary, I would try to take the full three weeks so as to maximize the bang for your buck on flying over there. BTW I just read about a new all business class airline into Paris that, for business class, is quite reasonable. If you don't want to spring for a flat bed seat, fly during the day, land at night, and get right on the local schedule. Avoid caffeine, drink lots of water, get sun and exercise and you won't have any jet lag. I would consider flying into London (frankly between Gatwick and LHR there are so many flights and carriers that you can usually get the best deals). I would consider excursions to Stonehenge and Bath. Then I'd take the Chunnel to Paris. No one needs to tell you what to see in Paris! Outside of Paris I'd consider train trips to Versailles of course, and maybe to Chartres to see the famous cathedral and have dinner. If you are going a full three weeks, I might throw in Belgium and do an open jaw, flying into one city and out of a different one. I like the Hop on Hop off buses, tacky though they are, because they give you a quick lay of the the land. I usually research the "36 hours in" or "three perfect days in" articles in advance, to get ideas about what Id like to do. These are from the NY Times and periodicals so more timely than guidebooks.

There are roses that are slow to break dormancy but if the canes are brown and if you cut off the end of canes and you don't see healthy white or apple green pit, I am afraid your roses are gone. Hope you kept the receipt and you can request credit for them.

I agree with the above posters about the canes having to be green. I did the same as you before I knew I should soak first. I just plopped Cherry Parfait right in the ground. The canes stayed green but it didn't break dormancy for almost 2 months! I thought sure it was a gonner but it finally started leafing out. Again if the canes are brown or black it's more then likely a goner.

I have Rosa Mundi and it is green in the cane but still faaasst asleep. It seems to like sleeping, much like my husband.

I had the same problem with a gold celebration that I received and potted it. Since it was too early to take it outside I kept it watered and by the window where it received good sunlight. 8-12 weeks later no growth or change watsoever. I just took it out last weekend. I planted it in the garden but in the process I saw the roots and they looked healthy. The top of the canes were dry so I cut a piece and saw life below. I hope it does something now that its in the ground. I fertilized and it was also my weekend to start on the tea on my older roses so I did the same for this one. I will update in a couple weeks.

If these were body bag plants, they most likely were dead,or on there way to being dead, when you planted them.

As Dan Keil notes -- 6 weeks ago was in mid-February. That's getting late for body-bagged roses in Southern California.
To add to the problem, we have had weeks of below normal temperatures, interspersed with two spells of several days each, when the temperatures approached 100 degrees.

It's not an easy combination for a rose that was dug from the fields in November.

1. What varieties are the roses?

2. From whom did you buy them?

I kind of have the same problem. I did soak my Social Climbers and Scent from Aboves for about 18 hours then planted, mulched. I planted 6 roses, 4 of which are FINAllY now starting to leaf out a little bit. But, 2 are still not showing much signs of life. I planted them about 3 weeks ago so not quite the six weeks you were talking about. The canes are a healthy green though, so I have hope still. I quess I am just too impatient! I have been keeping them watered about every 2 days and misting the canes to keep them moist. How long should it take for them to fully leaf out?

As the foliage grows it promotes feeder root growth... since there is no foliage net, it's up to the canes to send out feeder roots on their own... this can take awhile as it is using only stored energy in the canes...

As long as they are green and the pith is fresh (I cut them everyone once in a while just to make sure) they are trying to grow roots...

When they break dormancy depends on the variety AND depands on the plant. You can have two plants of the same variety from the same source break dormance at different times. Some can sit there for 8 weeks, I have seen it. Patience, folks, patience. As long as the canes are still green and firm, they sre doing things underground.

Thanks everyone. I'm afraid the canes are brown. I haven't snipped any yet to look at the inside but it's good to know that for next time. These were Tamora roses from Wayside. They shipped very late because even they had a tough time getting them going.

I never have any luck with David Austin roses. They usually don't even break dormancy for me. Quite the opposite from a good bareroot hybrid tea, floribunda, or mini. They will do just fine.
If the canes are not green they are probably dead so get your money back.
I have a rose that has green plump canes that has been sitting in a pot waiting to break dormancy since the second week of April.
I am just trying to be patient and wait it out but it is hard to do!!

I recd about 10 bareroots in early April which I soaked and potted up. 9 of them broke dormancy within a month. There was 1 however that did nothing. The canes turned brown. I snipped a few inches off the canes and it was brown inside. Figuring it was a goner I decided I could use the pot for something else. As I grabbed the canes to yank the thing out of the pot, lo and behold there were lots of white feeder roots! I shoved the thing back in the pot, cut the canes down to about 2 inches above the bud union and just let it sit. Amazingly it now has 7 basal breaks coming from the bud union! I was very surprised but you really just ever know what's going on underground! It was a good lesson for me in having patiece with bareroots.

I just gave Rosa Mundi a good shot of alfalfa tea today. Hopefully it will be akin to a shot of espresso. Wakey wakey! (hey, it works for ME. Coffee that is, not alfalfa tea >_
