HFGH Problem

I have constructed the wood foundation of 97.5 inches by 75 inches and squared 123 inches like instuctions say. Now when attaching the floor plates, the side plates (34) are an inch too long. Now what?

I discovered that problem also on my recently erected 6'x8'. I think squaring to 124" would have been just right. Fortunately I had pre-assembled part of the frame and noticed it was a little off, but not completely trusting my measurements, I squared to 123 3/4". The back overhangs a little, but was able to get bolted to my wooden frame okay. Perhaps you can overlap a little on each side.

This is why my son insisted on assembling the floor plates before constructing the foundation. We sometimes kid him because he's so cautious ... but sometimes it pays off, and he's too gracious to say "I told you so." Perhaps by posting your experience you will save someone else the same problem.

If I'm understanding the problem correctly, would it be possible to find some 1" think lumber to attach (very securely) to the outside of the foundation (probably at the rear, away from the door) to extend it out so you don't have that floor plate sticking out? It probably need not extend all the way to the ground; just something to securely support that aluminum strip. I don't think I'd split the difference and allow even a half inch of the plate to protrude out below the doorway - too great a chance it might get bent down.

Good luck with the rest of the assembly - I hope it's relatively trouble-free for you. Take your time ... I know that's difficult when you want to see it completed and start fitting it out and filling it up! If you haven't done so already, do a search for conifers' photo documentation of the assembly process ... it was a Godsend for us!

Kudzu9, Thanks for the response. I've still been trying to contact Superior Autovents, with no reply except to say they will get back to me sometime... The framing is complete. I am beginning to install the panels, and wanted to make sure the vents (which are all on the same side) are going to fit properly. It's just the vent windows which need drilling, plus part #42 at the bottom of the vent. It seems to be much easier to install the vent opener now, when I can take the window apart and drill the holes, than later, when I would have to pull the roof apart and take all the vents off to drill the parts and then replace them. There are only 2 windows with the vent openers. Anyway, I think if I buy some angle aluminum and cut and drill it to fit (the piece supplied by the manufacturer is just not the right size), I can make it work. Did you install these openers with no problems? It just doesn't seem to fit properly. I was hoping to hear from someone with experience in this particular area. Ann

Yep that is how I had my shade cloth this summer but I took it off a month ago because it will prevent snow from sliding off the roof My 10x12 HFGH has survived 80 mph winds but mine is in a location where it has a good wind break Soon will be going into it's 4th season no problems so far.

Here's some photos. #1 buy an exhaust fan on a thermostat with a shutter or shutters on the same thermostat loop. I ripped my door off and got rid of it. I took a few 2 x 4's went to the hardware store ... bought some screen, attached it to the frame I built and then got a bunch of poly and tacked it to the frame I built and brought a few bricks inside to hold the poly to the floor. On days when you are around (a "weather station" unit is helpful so you are alerted when the temps rise) , I'm always around so that's an easy deal, but, at anytime I could drape that poly up so the screen was allowing air exchange. The door was held on with a big clamp. That piece of chicken crap "bar/track" on the top of the door frame, I clamped MY DOOR to it. DONE! Cost me 10 cents the way I see it. Everyone has a saw, a hammer or screwdriver so fix it and stop complaining. Those vents don't do jack squat. You need an exhaust fan. Get yourself a shade cloth too. That'll lower temps 10 degrees. Again, I found some bricks laying around and anchored it. Again, Done! Sorry but this is going no-where. Dax Here's your photos. This is a cool mister you can buy anywhere. I'd recommend a larger one that holds more water. This too will lower temps.

When I built my 10X12 HFGH I never even bothered reading the dimensions I assembled the base and measured it then built my foundation to fit.

Well, the instructions were wrong. The dims should have been 99 inches length instead of 97.5. I went ahead and assembled the base and measured. All I am out is 8.00 for another board. Thanks, James
