Dead batter in JD 955

I am borrowing a 955 that worked great for a few days and this morning the battery is too low to turn it over. I found the battery thanks to this forum and saw it's a 12V, but wondering if I should charge it, or jump it, or both. Does it have an alternator? Basically, how long do I need it hooked up to my battery before disconnecting and using it?

that's a full sixed tractor yer talkin about with a yanmar diesel engine... A little out of our L&G stuff around this forum.

anyhow, pull the battery - take it to a qualified shop and have it LOAD tested to determine if it's good or not. Remove the negative battery post first when you take it out. Would expect it's yer re$$ponsibility to replace battery as tractor wus in yer possession...

While the battery is out, clean both terminals and posts with emory/sandpaper to bare metal to eliminate corrosion as part of the prob... also connections to chassis ground.

I kind of disagree, If I had 12K Plus tractor and I loaned it out ( I dought I would do that) I wouldn't want somebody that knows little about batteries, starting and charging system removing my battery let along trying to jump it replace it or charge it if fear of the whole system might get screwed up or burnt up?.

Sorry If I ever borrowed something ( I dought that will ever happen, thats what rental places for) I sure wouldn't be fooling around with it without the owner premission. Yes, I agree it broke on borrowed time so the barrower will of course have to accept some responsibility, but jacking with it and maybe making it worse is not the answer IMO.

Eighty percent TTTF means you have 20% of something else, and that is very significant. What does it say on the label? If it contains perennial ryegrass, turn it down. No cool-season grass is more disease prone than ryegrass, but it germinates fast so people "think" they like it. If it contains KY bluegrass, just bear in mind that the percentages are calculated on weight, and KY bluegrass seed is very tiny, a fraction of the size of fescue seed. So a very small single-digit percentage of bluegrass can mean more bluegrass than you might imagine. If that's what you want, fine. But you should be aware of that. It's tough to say how it will blend in your lawn without knowing what you already have, or what exactly is on the seed label. And by the way, if the seed label (which legally must be on the bag) indicates any percentage or fraction of a percentage of weeds or "other crop" (a euphemism for weeds) -- do not buy that seed. You can buy locally designed mixes and blends with 0.00% of those.

Only 3-4 times? Surely this recommendation must be published somewhere. Could you provide a link or a copy of that mulching standard so I could forward it to the engineers at Kubota? I'm sure other companies would like a copy of that standard as well. They must be going by an outdated requirement that doesn't limit the number of cuts for mulched grass. How do you propose I test my deck to see if it meets the standard? I'd hate to blame Kubota for the sticking grass only to find out later they are in compliance with the "no more than 4 cuts" rule. All this time I thought that thick, juicy, healthy grass was the problem. Come to find out my deck is exceeding the allowed cuts per blade of grass!!

I really cannot explain why AgriFab recommends a min hp rating for a non-PTO driven attachment. Maybe someone else has that answer. No issue with you being female. Females ask questions, guys learn the hard way. When's the last time you heard a woman say "Watch this!"? I hope this isn't demeaning, but a lawn tractor is like a small handheld electric mixer and a garden tractor is lake a KitchenAid countertop mixer. The handheld works fine for what it was designed for like whipping eggwhites or batter for 6 pancakes, the countertop will do that too, but it is also built to mix bread dough. You may be able to mix one or two loafs of bread dough with the handheld (if you don't break your wrist), but eventually (sooner than later) the handheld is going to break. Not because of the motor size but because the rest of its parts and gears. HP isn't the controlling factor with tractors, the power and strength is also in the transmission, axels and frame. There are plenty of 12hp Wheelhorse tractors out there that will outpull most 22, 24, or even 28hp lawn tractors to Moscow and back. Is your JD 100 an automatic or do you shift gears like a manual transmission?

Good to see all the midwestners and Kansans on here. I'm in the same boat as the rest of you. I have commented elsewhere the last 2 years have been way off normal here. After the light frost and bringing in all plants I couldn't get in the cold frame the long range showed the lowest for 10 days of 46. So started finishing up the potting I had started because I had no more room under the lights. Had over 300 plants outside and around a 100 inside under lights. Starting Friday morning they stated saying 35-36 Sunday morning. I had too many to try to bring in. I delivered some to their new owners early and put the others that was outside the cold frame next to cedar trees or under a carport. I thought they would be fine. Did spray around 11 pm Saturday night. When I got up it said it had been 35-36 for 4 hours. But there was frost. And hurt a few. Then 93 today. I'm heading out now to start dropping them in. No turning back now. Would of been better off in the ground with buckets around them Sunday morning. I've finished potting up. Peppers are hardening off and will be a week before they start going in. I like the soil to be warmer before they go. Late last week the soil here was 60. We had a 90 degree day last week. And will be 71 for a high tomorrow. I planted a few direct winter sown seeds this winter. They look great. Even had removed the tops and they came through fine. The firs emerged Arpil 2nd. And the biggest is a thick stemmed 7" right now. But of course no hardening off and no transplant shock. If they produce as well I will be doing at least 1/3 to 1/2 of my 80 plants this way next year. Have to cheat mother nature when I can. I'm trying to find a method I can use on 40-80 plants. Don't want that many wall o waters. Hope everyone has a great gardening week. Better go put mine out in the 40 mph wind. They will get a bucket for protection as they go in. JD

rcmoser, that was my thought exactly on the borrowed thing. I have left my key on in my lawn tractor and killed the battery several times and it seemed like that probably happened this time. When the first person suggested doing all sorts of testing I just emailed the guy who agreed that I should just jump it (worked fine). I'm now removing the key entirely so it doesn't happen again.

If you borrow something that needs repair, you repair it. It's nice if you don't have to tell the person before you return it. Why make them worry as long as things are taken care of. If it's more than what I can handle, you ask. I only asked on the tractor since I wasn't familiar with larger equipment.

Anyway... problem fixed. Thanks for the insight.
