I noticed on Radio Times and Memorial Day that canes are wrinkling a bit. They are lateral wrinkles but still green. They kind of look like pickles. Could that be cold or dehydration (It has been cool, dry and windy: altogether useless weather for growing anything). Or is something even more sinister afoot?

When it is going below freezing I put covers on for the night. They are in pots.

Hi,
I had the same problem on one of my roses. I followed the cane down to the crown and sure enough at the bottom of the canes that were wrinkling there was canker. You have to cut those canes out if you indeed have canker. Or perhaps these canes are not taking up water, there might be something wrong with the root system. Water them well.

well i checked out radio times and nearly all the stems had wrinkling to some extent or the other. so it is now a stump of rootstock. think it will come back or will i have a vacancy here soon?

with most of the eggs i have hatched out, it took anywhere from 30 minutes to half a day, as long as the chick is peeping and can breathe it should be ok, just don't let it get too cold

A ten year old good shape troy as you describe should be worth $800. Starting from the bottom, worn out tines (replacement $100)plus two hours labor.Tires and axle seals $100 2-3 hous labor. Tranny check for end play, in threw shaft not to exceed 1/32 nd of a inch leaking seals behind teh pto clutch disc both engine side and tranny side. rear tine shaft axle seal leaks, smoothness of shfiting and holding in gear when tilling, run it till it gets hot, any jumping out of gear would be suspect. The "heart" of the mechine is the tranny. about $800 replacement, if its clean overall, and the owner kept up maintence, it should be fine? replace engine about $500 rougly if possable pull the top off the tranny and look for any excessive shinny, or unusual wear. on moving parts any looseness would scare me too also check the (90) gear lube should be GL 4 as per troy stick a magnet to the bottom of tranny from the inside any metal is bad, also look for brass/brooze, If owner permits drain the tranny fluid before removeing top and put the gear lube in a shallow pan and stir it around, looking for metal. also use a bright light when viewing inside tranny,If the owner is a flipper or horse trader type $200 would be my top offer ? Hydrogen peroxide has a problem similar to chlorine in solution, ie, in the wrong concentrations, they are toxic. The advantage of hydrogen peroxide is that it leaves solution completely in 1-2 hrs after it has done its work; chlorine hangs on for days. I treat all water for nutrient change and make-up to 500-1000 ppm with 3% solution available in stores and let it sit for 2 hours. I have no nasties carried by water. Solution concentrations will depend upon your water supply.

1. It would be better for the trees to be kept outdoors, especially while dormant so that you don't risk them leaving dormancy early. Generally, only houseplants should be kept indoors. 2. You can plant it, or transplant it before the ground freezes. If you decide to plant it, I wouldn't go and dig it up again. 3. Since the trees are only 8 inches, you don't need a very large pot at all for them over winter. I would put them into a 1 gallon size pot with a well-draining media. 4. Trees don't require as much moisture while dormant. I would only water them when the media completely dries. 5. Same as 4. 6. If you keep them outdoors, it would probably be best to keep them somewhat sheltered from the extreme temperatures. Snow acts as an insulator, so it wouldn't be the death of them if they were covered by it, although I would keep them under a covered porch or something similar. 7. When you do plant them, now or in the spring, make sure you don't plant them too deeply. You only want to make sure the roots are covered and leave the root flare (part of the tree where the roots meet the main trunk) exposed. Make sure to dig a hole just as deep as the roots go and twice as wide. It's better to plant the trees too shallow than too deep. Apply an area of mulch 1-2 inches deep around the trees, not letting the mulch touch the trunks. Keep the trees well watered during the first few growing seasons when they are in their permanent location.

I have had a few winkled canes and the wrinkling is caused by the cane drying out. On one of my roses the cane looked okay but it was cracked at the base. The other was just dead because it had died out even though I watered it. I would just scratch the canes to see if they are green underneath or even cut a bit off the end to see what it looks like. Mine didn't come back to normal so I think they might have been frozen during the winter.

wrinkling usually means the cane is dead...

I don't know, Triple B if some of the responders above understand what you are describing. I, too, have seen this "wrinkling" for the first time last fall. It was on two of my hardy roses in fact, Quadra and Alexander Mackenzie, and the canes were not dead, not dry. The wrinkles are not going vertically up and down the cane, which I agree if you see that in spring means the cane dried out over winter...these are horizontal wrinkles (lateral as Triple B said) that do give that part of the cane a slightly swollen appearance, and yes, somewhat like a pickle, LOL. I was thinking some kind of new cane borer, but it's not like the swellings I see with rose stem girdler, either. It's something new and I've been watching and reading to see if I could identify it. I guess I need to dissect one of those canes and see what's inside...

ok I must have worded it wrong. The wrinkles are going along the 'length' of the cane. They are not puffy looking, just drying up.(and now they are gone. I snipped them. Didn't want to take any chances)

FWIW, when I have seen that symptom on one of many canes, and cut that cane off as far down as possible, I have in maybe 50% of the cases saved the plant.

When I have seen it on an immature plant, with only 1 or two canes to start with, I have lost 100%.
