My GH has a wood base that is attached to posts that are concreted into the ground, kind of like a pier foundation. On the wood base I have little hook and eye's screwed into the wood, it is the eye part that is just a little metal circle. Then I put my tarp over the top. I use bungees and hook the bungees to the hook an eye. After I do that I wrap with the plastic wrap, I only go around 3 or 4 times. When I wrap the sides I overlap the tarp ends so the tarp can't fly away. If I have to do it again I will take pic's. I bought extra clips from Charlie's and my roof panels are calked in. I think I will caulk the whole thing, I was up there last night and felt a little breeze. I heard good things about caulking. I might leave the panel opposite the door uncaulked to remove in the summer to get the breeze, we'll see. Here is a pic of the GH with the tarp on as a shade cloth. The tarp goes to the ground on the opposite side of this pic. You can see my bungees attached to the wood frame. How are your neighbors from Scotsdale holding up, Kenneth (madabouteu--love that name!0? Our paper had about half the front page devoted to the rain and flooding, and most of another inside with the headling 'Enough already!' The abutilons are blooming well--favorite of the hummingbirds--and the brugs are trying for tree status. Have to wade out and see if they're budding. Had a couple rounds earlier on a couple, but I haven't done enough for several that are more exposed and should be blooming by now. They like it a little cooler and generally get buds when we have a bit of cooler weather like this rain has brought. Think I'll go do that now! It's actually not raining at the moment. Now where did I put my hip waders?

I've learned that some shade for my produce plot is very important. I am a California gardener turned New Mexican. My gardening skills have been seriously challenged since I made the move to NM! Trees also mitigate the wind factor; I live on a mesa in central NM. This morning I began an experiment with branches from Santolina plants, to see if they will repel the beetles which kill off my squash plants. I pruned the Santolina and distributed the branches amongst the squash plants. I sure hope it works, because there is an army of grey colored beetles dong damage in the garden. I have three Santolina planted in a large bed of strawberries. The Santolinas got rid of the beetles which used to infest the strawberries. The marigolds seem to help repel ants. I have marigolds growing throughout my produce plot. The flowering plants which I've had good success with here are: roses (if they get some shade), dianthus, snapdragons, hollyhock, moss roses, honeysuckle, chrysanthemums, sunflowers, Maximillian sunflowers, yarrow, hibiscus, marigolds, Texas bluebells, creeping Veronica, plumbago, salvias, cosmos, bachelor buttons, penstemons, catmint, hummingbird mint and scabiosa. (Maximillians and yarrow are invasive plants. One has to plant them where it is okay for them to spread.) I am also growing blueberry bushes, strawberries, a couple of grape vines, asparagus, artichoke, summer squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, lima beans, bush beans, arugula, thyme, mediterranean oregano, basil, green chilies, corn, shallots, onions and garlic. I hope to do beets, chard, winter squash and kale for a fall crop. I have two young almond trees, which are doing well.

We will be having radiant in-floor heat throughout the house, so I would just run it out in the greenhouse too. I will also probably do some sort of air circulation system. Be sure to insulate the heck out of the slab it sits on! I would imagine that the extra humidity from it will be welcome in the main house in the winter, but problematic in the summer. I presume you will have a set of weather-tight doors (perhaps a double set, forming an airlock) between main house and this space, so that you can prevent warmth or coolth from travelling between the two when you don't want it to? --Steve
