merits of Nahema vs Scepter'd Isle
Comments (22)That's such great news Ken because I have one on Fort that got hit by some sort of weed killer that my lawn guy put down and it was stunted for an entire year. It is now shaking it off and finally starting to grow strong. I worry that I put it in a place that doesn't get enough sun, but its hard to tell since it had that problem with the weed killer. I'm leaving it alone for now because I fear a move right now would do it in. If it doesnt recover by the fall however, I will consider moving it to a better location. Right now I have 3 Austins in a sunnier spot that are performing admirably. Particularly Pat Austin that blooms its head off and has gotten to be about 7 feet tall....See MoreNahema pruning question!!!
Comments (11)All of my roses from Chamblees have been great roses and grow very well for me however I do think some roses are more vigorous grafted vs own root. I used to beat myself up when I would see pics of roses that were the same age as mine yet were these huge roses covered in blooms until I realized they were grafted and were probably more vigorous due to the grafting. Just remember that not all roses grow the same for everyone due to different climates, I would be patient, it sounds like your Nahema is putting on new growth and I wouldn’t be surprised if she starts growing like crazy for you soon. I will also add that all my DA roses came from Chamblees and some took off straight away while others have taken longer to put on some growth and from what I have read and been told by some forum members that certain Austin’s take longer own root vs grafted. So I think it just depends on the rose. My own root Heritage took off the first year and had been huge and covered in blooms but my own root Tamora was a runt for 3 years and now this year being its 4th year it has suddenly burst into growth and is gorgeous....See MoreSome Autumn Roses (Quicksilver/Nahema/Pomponella)
Comments (28)Aaron, I think some of those reports were Z4 folks. Mine is tip hardy here, so I suspect a little die-back in a colder zone. I love everything about this rose including her quirky leaves! : )) I have Pomponella also, but still in pots so any further info on her would be most welcome. Health seems good so far, but I'm interested in growth habit, size and ultimate thorniness. Will she sprawl as a free-standing shrub? What are her light requirements? Thanks in advance. Not many seem to grow this one....See MoreNahema, size and habit?
Comments (43)Thank you @katyajini ! The cattle panel it's on is 16 feet long and not quite 5 feet tall. The plan is to continue to pull it fan-like out to the sides and fill the panel top to bottom instead of letting it go straight up. Climbers bloom on the laterals and lateral sprout off the main canes only when those canes start going horizontal (or at least 45 degrees.) More laterals, more blooms. The amount of width you have may determine how much height you need. For really big climbers I weave their canes side to side/back and forth for the same horizontal cane effect. Nahema may be too stiff to weave. @Lek Arun I know nothing about growing roses in the desert, but I will tell you that I just have no success growing roses in pots in the summer. They hate it. They get stressed, black spot, get bugs, lose their leaves and generally give me the finger when ever I walk past them in August. It's like you can't water them enough and even if you do they still aren't happy. We are typically "only" in the mid 90s in August--I can't imagine trying it in LV. It may be because the pots don't really protect their roots from the heat they way they would be protected in the ground--I really don't know, but I vowed to stop trying it a few years ago and it's one of the best gardening decisions I've made! You might try putting a few in the ground and see it that helps, something for you to consider, anyway....See Moreyork_rose
