New Garden Tractor???

I purchased a new Sears YS 4500 Yard Tractor last year and am now in the position to purchase an upgrade (within reason). Here we go: Sears YS 4500, Hydro Tranny, 24 HP B/S OHV Intek Engine, Hours Run Meter, Wheel Weights, Front Bumper Guard, Garaged during the "off-season". Long story short - a great machine to be had by the right person - 50 hours on the meter.

Question - what's it worth???

Looking at the Sears "Professional" and "DGS" Line-up. Any thoughts on this equipment??? I know you JD guys will have a field day with this. Just looking for honest feedback. I don't have a bunch of $$$ to spend and would like to make the best, most practical decision within my current budget ($ 2,500 +/-).

Your suggestions/comments are appreciated.

Not real sure of the value of your current tractor. Maybe $1500 or so to the right person? Brand new DYS 4500 is 2k right now. Good luck selling it, just have to find the right buyer.

My suggestion is buy a used better brand name with dealer support. Make as many calls as you can to local dealers as trade ins are about to start rolling in. You could try to go to a dealer and trade your current machine in. You'll get hosed on the price over selling it on your own, but it may be worth a shot.

I would have trouble going back to Sears if I were you. Local dealer of mine had an 06 Simplicity Prestige with 42 hours on it. Wanted $3500, I said let me sleep on it, called him the next day to buy and it was already gone. He turned it over in less than 24 hours. A deal like that with your trade in would get you to your price range and you'd get a beast of a tractor. Used JDs can be a great value as well. If you go the used route make sure you know what you are buying. You could jump on a great deal and wind up with no better performance than you have now. Do your homework before you buy, but be ready to make a quick decision.

There was one recently on Craiglist for sale so I emailed the seller. He said that he wanted $2000 for it. I haven't seen the post recently so I assume he got his price.

Its always a question whether, after seeing the vehicles towing trailers with the large tanks of what is supposed to be herbicides, pesticides and besides, how much is going to cost to do it yourself. I've always thought if I hired a spray company, I'd want to take a sample of the spray and let the guy know I was going to get it checked out for effectiveness. Would he then suggest "he's forgotten something back at the office and will be back to do your lawn shortly". If the weed control is on a guaranteed kill or a free return spray, you might take him at his word but...... do not pay him up front. Pay a little, with the remainder in the time specified he says the weeds will be taken care of. There are just too many fly-by-nighters---and they don't wait for night to fly, in taking money that, when you think they do it to hundred of householders, a lot of money goes where the weeds don't. Any reputable dealer will take a pay-as-he-kills schedule and offer some form of guaranteed results. D I Y, you can make up your own strengths of mix but does require you getting out and doing it. Here's some good advice from Slammer's archived posts: 1. Carefully evaluate the size mower you need and buy at least one size larger. 2. NEVER buy a mower from ANYPLACE that will not let you test drive it or at least a similar model. Ergonomics are just as important as performance and capability. (Vitally important!) 3. DO NOT base your purchase on price or brand name alone! Do proper research and find all of the available models that fit your criteria and haggle, save, or trade to get the right equipment for the job. Do not compromise! If you follow these three tips you will end up a happy camper with just the right unit for the job. If you disregard this advice your gonna end up with One or the other of the following problems: A. Buyers remorse. Stuck with a piece of junk or simply a unit inadequate for the task at hand. Or.. B. A teed off spouse when you start shopping for another tractor just 3 - 6 months down the road because you didn't buy the right unit in the first place. Now go forth and shop and try and have fun!

Sorry, ducati996 for delay in responding : Parts of the lawns are not perfectly smooth and have rocks scattered thru out...part of the CT landscape look. Others are very smooth and manicured looking. Some are sloped and a bit hilly. It's definitely lawn, not a pasture with an irrigation system thru out. I have a John Deere 955 (diesel) with a 70a Bucket loader... I also have a 413 Rotary Cutter for it. I was told this was mainly a brush cutter for mowing down a field or pasture and in the 7 years I've been here, it's never been used. I don't think the John Deere would be good due to it's size and manueverablity...bronze sculptures, trees, rocks, slopes, and slightly rolling lawns. The Gravely 50" Promaster has been a great machine but I wanted to investigate other options. I know I'm looking at a $10-15k investment so I want to make sure I make the right choice. When I talk to the tractor salesmen, they of course want to sell me their machine whether it's the best or not :P Thanks so much for all your input :)

What do you plan to do with the "upgrade"? I'm no expert, but ran a CHEAP Sears model over a rough yard for a long time and it mowed just fine. If that is what you are doing, without problems, then I wouldn't change anything. If you want to do some serious work otherwise, then I would consider the advice in the forums to upgrade to a whole new class.

For the total cost of that sears mower, I never worried too much about bumps and bruises. A broken spindle was $30 and a couple hours in the garage. Pulled a cart just fine. NEVER would have considered subjecting it to real work though. Repairing/ replacing an engine or transmission is beyond me. A lot of guys on here seem to get a lot of work out of economical garden tractors, but seems to me you buy a little insurance for longevity and against headaches when you upgrade to a better class.

I had one to sell very similar to yours a couple of years ago and I asked $2,000 for it. I had a cart with it ($120 cost) but no weights like you have. It was bought at the asking price by the first person who saw it. Like swimjim said, look at used and you'll get a lot more for your money. You just have to know what you want and be ready to jump on a good deal.

I have had several craftsman tractors over the years and they have all given me great service. I'd think you could get 2k for it, at least around here you could.

A person can buy a brand new Craftsman DGS garden tractor for a couple hundred more. I would say $1500.00 at the very most. Just look at what they're getting on E-bay, not so much.
