Craftsman 42" rider 917 276601 B&S model 441777 type 0283E1

I used my mower to jump start another mower with a dead battery. A few days later, my battery was dead and I bought a new one. After starting my mower, I tested the voltage at running RPM and found that the voltage kept rising. After a few minutes, it reached 15VDC and I killed the mower, fearing it would fry my new battery. Can someone tell me why the voltage keeps rising?

The skematic shows an alternator [#696459] with a diode in the circuit but I cannot find a diode part # on parts list, unless it is inside the wiring. Also, I did not see a voltage regulator. The only other electrical part I saw was the armature-magneto [#691060]. Did I possibly blow the alternator or diode? How do I test them? Thanks.

it is possible, but usually it would blow the fuse. when you use a mower to boost somethign else, hook it up and let it charge the other battery for a bit. then DISCONNECT IT and try to crank the other machine.

That charging voltage is correct. Let it charge.

Plug the black (negative) lead in the bottom hole. And the red lead (positive) lead into the hole above that. Set the rotary switch to 30 on the VDC scale section. Measure across your battery first. It should read about +13 volts with the red lead on the + terminal and the black lead on the - battery terminal. Measure the voltage on your cut off leads from your new battery charger. If it reads about +15 volts then the one you have the red test lead to is the positive lead and the other is the negative. If it reads about -15 volts then reverse your meter leads until it reads about +15. Again the red lead is on the positive wire. To measure your house voltage, set the meter to VAC and the rotary switch to greater than 150. Hope this helps.

Laptop Recalibration As a laptop gets older, it starts to slow down a little. You may notice that pages load slower, videos take longer to start playing, and general slowness of the machine. Battery maintenance is an important process that many people neglect. Recalibration should be done monthly if possible to ensure best results. If done on a regular basis, you should notice greatly extended battery life on your computer, and hopefully postpone the purchase of any replacement parts.

Several months back I also had problems with my 4 year old HP laptop. The power adapter had to be wiggled for the darn thing to make a connection and keep power flowing to charge the battery and power the laptop. I took it to a shop that specializes in laptops and had it checked out. What was wrong was that where the adapter plugs in at the back was cracked inside from wear and needed to be replaced. The tech took apart the laptop and even showed me where the problem was. The new part had to be sodered (sp) so was not just a simple fix. With labor, parts and having them add another 500mgs of ram (Something I had been wanting to do for a long time.) it cost me around $300 for everything. Cheaper then a new one and works like a charm now. It should last a few more years until I'm ready to upgrade ;o)

we are a commercial 2 way shop and do business with a lot of farmers. a few weeks back one drove up, handed me his Garmin and said here, if you can make it work you can have it. it took me all of 5 minutes to fix it. the problem with ANY device that has battery contacts is they get dirty over time. remove the battery, clean both the battery and the contacts onthe unit itself with an eraser and reinsert teh battery.

DC voltage is ok. The diode is near the end of the pigtail coming from the stator. If you have AC going to the battery, the diode is cooked.

So if I understand correctly don and tomplum, rising voltage is normal as the engine runs. Do you have any idea how high the voltage will rise and what limits it? It probably took 2-3 minutes to reach 15VDC at normal running RPM. Thanks for your comments.

Car here that I dont drive often enough to keep the battery charged, put a charger on it sometimes when I know I'm going to use it.... when it starts the voltage rises up around 16.5 then as it charges awhile it tapers down to fourteen something.

Fast charger I have puts 20v to it initially then switches to about the same volts mentioned above... full charge it holds it at 13.2v

There isn't harm in voltage rising to 15V over a few minute time- unless it continues to rise into oblivion. You will see that to some degree over a matter of seconds at times when testing. You find commonly between 13x and 15 Dc volt at high rpms. Sometimes they creep a bit over 15. These alternators aren't normally high output. Do check for AC feeding into the battery. Batteries don't like AC. AC is a sign of a diode gone bad. If so, you can get the diode kit instead of replacing the whole stator.

I checked the voltage recently on a Murray rider just to see if it was charging the battery and the voltage went to about 16.2 volts before dropping off.

If a the diode has failed, you will pickup ac just by touching your meters terminals to the battery terminals- same as doing an dc test except using the ac scale on your meter. It isn't abnormal to get a small initial reading that then goes away. If danfut has no ac and 15v dc, nothing more needs to be done.
