Engine kick-back

Yes, i know what causes it, and have checked all of that, but it still does it.

so, i removed the starter housing, and the flywheel. Key not sheared, nor nudged, looks ok. Carb is clean, tank clean, new spark plug installed, blew out all around engine and fins, sanded and reset the coil to flywheel settings. Lower crankshaft not bent. Blade not bent.

Reassembled all of it, set throttle, pushed rubber primer bulb, pulled starter rope---RATS!! Still kicks back!

So, since i am just getting back into the game--what is next? What did i over-look?

Last summer, late, i did put a new fly key in it, and changed the blade, and air filter, and it ran ok. Took it back, and it ran well for the owner. But, 2 months later, he said he bought a new mower, so take this one home and keep it. So-here i am--perplexed and puzzled! Any ideas?

Guess I'll go bluegrassin tonight--might heal itself whilst i'm gone!

I only have two suggestion. Even though you put in a new key, it could be marked now and that is all it takes OR the blade is slipping and not carrying on thru acting as an extra source of inertia energy. This would be typical of some B&S push mower engines. You didn't say what it is.

Walt: As soon as it warms up a bit, i'm going to look at it again. I'll take your suggestions into my mind. I hate to take it all apart again, but i will if i find nothing out of kilter. Thanks: Rusty J.
PS: The key looked ok, and not nudged, but i'll check it again. And they are always good for parts. good wheels, and carb and other stuff! THKS!

You could be right on the parts engine due to what else you've seen in regards to the oil and noises. However, if in fact what is happening is fuel is continuing to seep into the engine when sitting, once that is corrected- all may be fine. Here's what I would do. Verify that the fuel shut off valve actually works. Run up the machine, shut the valve off and when it dies- change the oil again. Refill with oil and for good measure just remove the spark plug and walk away to ensure the fuel has evaporated. Re install the plug, turn on the valve and crank it up. Now what do you have? Here's the way I see it. On occasion, you will find one of these that fuel slightly seeps past the float valve. This in itself could be giving you the symptoms you describe. If your test run as described above goes well, that is what has been happening. If not, I suppose that it is possible that enough wear is present, enough carbon is above the piston to make a difference etc.

I have heard from multiple people about going nitrogen heavy at heavy blooming time so will be starting this year, although due to my schedule I think I am just going to do it when a majority of them are getting there versus attempt to time each one individually. And hoovb, due to that photo you posted of Brass Band on the photo gallery, I immediately went to RVR and placed an order for a band for the spring. I drool over it everytime I see one of your photos!

It is possible that your setting (low to mid 60's) is causing the coil to freeze, and shutting down on safety. This could explain why the unit needs to 'rest' for 40 minutes, in order for the ice to melt. Leaving your window open at night allows the night time humidity to infiltrate your apt. Leaving the a/c off all day allows the heat to build up. Both heat and humidity put a burden on your a/c which has to be satisfied before you feel comfortable. Being that your apt is 550 sq ft, the unit could be oversized which will result in frequent short cycling (less humidity removal). Try minimizing opening of your windows at night (unless outside humidity is low) and leaving your a/c on while away, although at a higher setting. You need to experiment. V

OP - to be fair to the pros here, your explanations of your contract, and of your builder's behavior, are very unclear, at least to this non-pro homeowner. I have great difficulty myself following statements such as: "the builder received some $$ as % of what I purchased. Lets say I paid $95 on a retail price of $100, then builder will get 10% of $95 or something like that. In some cases, I pay retail price but builder gets a significantly lower price. For ex, I pay $100, and he “charges” $100 but actually the cost is $70. " Are you saying, first, that you are personally paying the vendor directly for these items, and that the vendor is then paying the builder 10% of the value of your purchase? That would be a kickback, but is that what's really happening? Or are you saying that the builder is buying the items and charging you more than the invoice price for them? Has the builder actually provided you with the invoices from the vendor? If not, and assuming you have a cost-plus contract, I'd certainly insist on seeing the invoices. Presumably, if the builder is adding a mark up, it's covered under the terms of your contract. Obviously, the builder's time has value, and if he has to order, collect and store the goods, it would seem reasonable to me that he would charge you more than the base invoice price for the service he's rendering. But the contract is king, so what does it actually say?

here are a couple more ideas.

Failed mechanical compression release
Excessive valve clearance
liquid lock

some of the Briggs coils have electronic advance. I don't know if a failed coil could be operating in the advanced mode all the time.

Since this is a "freebie" my guess is that it is an older one, no advance for instance.

Rusty, first thing I would do is look at that blade. Those older B&S had a very light flywheel. IF the blade had a "slip" mechanism and slipped just a little when hitting compression, that was enough to make them kick back.

Walt: the more i think about it--the blade looked like it had been replaced. Maybe it is loose, but not slippy loose, or not the correct blade! Ah-hah! Something to check after lunch! Thanks: Rusty

Well, i changed the blade, but, it still does it! It got pushed outside, to moulder with the other junkers, waiting for their ride to the scrap yard! But, if i can find another engine, i'll use the deck for it! Thanks for the suggestions, though.

A refresher on the mower engine: A friend suggested that i install two gaskets between the large square plastic filter/ primer bulb/filter holder plate where it bolts onto the carb inlet area, so i did that. It fixed it!! Don't know why or how, but it is docile as a lamb when i pull the starter rope, and runs well, too. Any ideas why? RJ. And, i installed a different blade and holder on the crank-shaft, but that did nothing for it!

With one gasket, sometimes the air filter housing doesn't seal tight against the carb and when you prime, you don't get enough fuel into the throttle body. Most people just prime a few extra times. This is because the plastic housing slightly warps over time. Sometimes the air leak is so much that it won't prime at all.

With two gaskets, you make up the air gap caused by a warped housing.

Even though it starts, I still don't see the relationship between kickback and not enough primed fuel.

A valve seat which has popped out would cause quick a kick-back. Removal of the head would show this. Maybe give that a whirl.
