Tuff Torq K46 transmission noise

The Tuff Torq K46 Transmission on my new lawn mower makes a growling noise in both forward and reverse when it is changing speed from 0 to whatever. Is that normal?

What model tractor do you have, and how old is it? How many hours?

It's the hydrostatic whine. It's normal.

If you've ever listened to hydraulic equipment, it's a similar noise.

Thanks to this Thread I was able to repair the LT180 I just bought at an auction. All was good until about 30 minutes of mowing when the world stopped turning and the machine was barely moving. After reading all the info above I took a slightly different approach to remedy the slow trans-axle condition. Taking the least aggressive path, I was curious if just a fluid change would make a difference, I decided to jack the rear end up and pop a couple drain holes into the Axle cast housing where Tuff-Torq suggests. I then added 2 self tapping screws 1/2 inch long with a neoprene washer. Without the deck on the machine I was able to reach under the frame and pop the fill hole cover off using a stubby flat screwdriver. I cleaned up the magnet and filled the unit. 24 inches of 3/8 clear tubing and a small funnel allowed me to add back the 2 quarts of cheap 10-30 oil for my test. Popped the magnet and cap back in place and DONE! I am pleased that the result was success, the machine runs very well without growling and slowing after 30 minutes of use. My intention is to replace the 2 small drain holes with real drain plugs after about 5 hours of use and refill the unit with synthetic oil for hopefully many more years of use. Happy Mowing!!

Good choice. That X500 will do everything you ask of it. If you were looking for the 25 year machine, I believe you've found it. You should look into a Hayes enterprise sleeve hitch and a brinly back blade for when you start expanding the property. If you decide to get into row-crop gardening, you can find a lot of good deals on Brinly turning plows, cultivators, and discs online. Then get an earthway walk-behind seeder/planter and you'll be all set. You couldn't dream of doing those things with the X300. I highly recommend filling the rear tires with windshield washer fluid for snowplowing. Do a quick search (at the bottom) and you can find the post where I offered a few hints on one way to do it. Did you get the HDAP tires?

Hey guys, I did that L120 swap... it's relatively straightforward if you are mechanically inclined... looking at the L111 drawings on the JD site, it appears that the engine pulleys are double pulley assembly (the PL calls it "Idler"), and that it's a single piece. The G110 pulleys are larger in diameter compared to the L111 or L120 pulley sets - but both the tranny and engine pulley are the same size, so the speed ratio is 1:1. The larger diameter is to allow more power-transfer for the k66 tranny... otherwise the belt will slip, squeal, and burn on the smaller L111 pulley. If you use the G110 pulley on the tranny, and the L111 pulley on the engine, you'll have lower speed ratio, and your tractor will be crawling too slowly. So the question is: could you split the 2-pulley assembly from the L111, and somehow attach the deck pulley to the G110 engine power-train pulley / half-sheave. If you could do that, then the swap will be easy, allowing you to retain your manual PTO. If not, your only option would be to go to the electric PTO. All the added parts will probably push the cost of the swap to a point where it's just not worth it.... it may be cheaper to just buy a replacement T40 tranny. Good luck.

True, but......can we please call it "Hydrostatic Growl"?? That sounds more "manly" than Hydrostatic "Whine". I think Tim Allen could appreciate this. :^)

I have a Craftsman DYS 4500. This is the second Craftsman riding mower I have owned. I was surprised by how good it is. I expected less. This is my first hydostatic transmission so I am not familar with the noises they make. Other than the hydrostatic growl, the mower works great. I was concerned about traction on wet grass up hill but it does very well, better than my last one. It does get wet here--I live in Washington State on the wet side of the mountains.

mowie, I like the Hydrostatic growl comment with Tim Allen. I bet he also likes HP too.
farmer jim, you will like that hydrostatic growl along with the HP. Just 2 things check the oil in the engine and blow the debris off the transaxle and you will have that mower a long time.

I only hear mine (not a K46 but larger Hydro) when my mower is near idle. Check your owners manual, it may recommend a higher power setting than what you are using.

That is true. It is loudest and most noticeable at low RPM when I am pulling into or out of my garage. I don't notice it when I am at cutting RPM, but then there is a lot of engine noise to overcome so it still may be there.

I have a GX335 which has a K71 and it's very quiet. We recently bought a used LT160 with the K46 and it's pretty loud. So loud that I asked the dealer about it and he said it is normal for that tranny.

My neighbor was operating his new Kubota compact tractor yesterday and I could hear the hydrostatic whine from a distance away (100 yards or more). Its noise carried further than the tractor's engine noise and the noise was very similar to what my K46 does. So thank you all for the responses, I feel better now about the noise mine makes.

Farmer Jim, I almost forgot to put in my 2 cents on noise protection for the ears. I use the foam plugs, I started using them about 2 years ago when ever I mow, weed eat, chain saw etc. It is unbelievable how addictive they are. I can't stand to run anything without them now. The only negative is, you might miss something with a problem early on when it's barely audible. The trade off is worth it.
