What's your favorite/leasts favorite seed to harvest?
Comments (5)I put moss rose in the zip lock bag, close it and give it a few shakes, seeds fall to the bottom. Milkweed can be tricky, I pick up the pod with seeds holding them both together, then place inside the baggie, hold the seeds and pull them off the "silky stuff" before it unfolds and flies all over. I used to open each of the white seed pods of Night Blooming Jasmine to get the black seeds , but have been told it is best to let the pods with seeds dry out naturally. Easy to germinate no matter. Trying to think if there are any sticky ouchy seeds to gather, nope...Guess I don't grow it if it isn't easy. later Bea...See MoreWhat your favorite place in your garden?
Comments (6)My favorite spot changes depending on what's blooming. Right now the honeysuckle is so fragrant and alluring. We constructed raised beds with cottage stones in multiple layers all throughout and around our yard, and made them butt-friendly height for sitting. So sitting by the honeysuckle now. We have a deck that is always very enjoyable and relaxing to sit on unless it is hot and sunny outside. Eventually it will be shaded. 28 bird stations around the house so always lots of bird and squirrel activity for entertainment and their songs are wonderful. Porch swing on cool days is nice. LaFuma chairs on the bridges over the creeklets is decadent :-) Sitting on raised bed ledge in depth of willow thicket completely surrounded by jungle effect is soothing. Sitting by pond when water running very nice. Walking down paths staring at trees and growth and examining everything is good. The bench looking out into the front 'swimming pool' and mermaid fountain is nice. Have tables and chairs and picnic table, enjoy reading or doing projects outside. Enjoy dining outside. In the winter it's been a bit bleak but as the conifers grow it will be better. Planning to plant some winter interest bushes eventually, may not be enough room. In general, planting a wide variety of trees and having lots to look at, lots of greenery, was a really good choice. But like hemnancy, there's just so much to do, always things to clean up and weeds and rechaining and chores so it's hard to relax without feeling guilty. Most thrilling of all: When it rains (Hallelujah!) being inside with all the windows open and sitting in recliner listening to that miraculous beautiful life-giving pitter patter, sighing in relief, thanking God for water, listening to the birds and smelling the flowers and vines wafting in the moist fragrant cool breeze, watching all the leaves flutter and sway and dance....See MoreWhat's your favorite today? Comments (34)Kelly, I think the table would look much better on my porch. :) Those are perfect color combinations too. It won't get rained on will it? I have two recent spots in my home. Now that the sun is shining through the windows again I love looking at my utility room in the afternoons. It also makes a nice plant hospital for the other plants in my house in case they get sick. Not a good picture because of the shadows on the shutters. They look really dark in this picture, but they're a light cream. Below is the lamp I bought specifically for the sofa table, but stupid me forgot how dark shades give off poor light, even though this is a 3-way. But the lamp found a new home in a small corner in the living room and it's perfect there. The area really highlights the embroidery on the shade. You can't tell from this picture but the two walls are only about 3 feet wide, which makes it a fun and difficult spot to decorate....See MoreWhat's your favorite way to prepare your vegetable beds in spring?
Comments (23)It's said to be more useful if applied in the autumn Dan, for that very reason. Nutrients have all winter to break down. Part of the ideal, whether spring or autumn, is not necessarily focusing on feeding the plants, but rather feeding the soil. Feed to the soil life, which is in much more abundance if not tilled, and they feed the plants all the mineral and nutrients they need, that is otherwise harder for the plant to get in the soil when tilling due to less of that soil life, thus the need for more of those nutrients in regular feeding schedules. You COULD just use a thick, heavy mulch of primarily hay and leaves or some other organic matter, and I am doing that as well as the compost, but the compost provides a stronger start for a brand NEW garden due to a space to sow seeds into, transplant plants into, as well as give a quick feed to the soil life. Not to mention it's also full of soil life, which, if taken care of, can possibly provide some long term nutrients to the plant in a brand new garden as that. Its going to be a very interesting experiment. I have some beds tilled to compare of course. I would recommend checking out Charles Dowding if you are interested. I am largely following a combination of his and Ruth Stout's methods. He has website with bi-weekly updates on his market garden as well as all of the experiments he runs. It's a very neat concept. Of course, he is in the U.K. so a bit different climate, making this an even more adventurous experiment....See Morespazzycat_1
