Kohler ch25 with oil consumption

My son and I are working on his mower engine. It is a Kohler CH25, twin. The problem is excessing oil consumption. It appears to be in one cylinder based on the spark plugs (one is normal, one is showing oil consumption). It consumes approx 1/2 quart every 12 hours of operation. No blue smoke, no apparent power loss, no other obvious problems (starts well, etc).

Last year we replaced the head gaskets and the intake valve seals - did not look bad, just trying the obvious. It had no effect. When we replaced the head gaskets, neither cylinder had a ridge or unusual wear.

So, we have narrowed it down to:

1. Rings

2. Bad valve guide

3. Crack in head (although none can be seen).

Compression in the cylinder is 130. We will do the other cylinder this weekend (need to remove some of the hydro to get the compression tester in the opposite cylinder).

Any things we should be looking for as we get into this engine?

Thank you.
