Comments (11)Thank you so much Jasminerose and Seil. I am re-assured that they will bloom more in the future. They've all been blooming and are healthy, just not like what I'm used to, I'll be patient! Jasminerose, thank you for the compliment, Firefighter is a gorgeous, wonderfully fragrant rose and VH is a great red too, and Francis Meilland is just about perfect, and that's the main reason I want them to bloom more!...See MoreMaybe more blooms on Francis Meilland
Comments (11)Thank you Pat and Jim. Pat, I think you would love it! If anyone could get it to bloom, you could, your roses are so prolific. I really do think there is something about the spot I planted mine that has prevented it from blooming more, since Firefighter is in the same bed, and has had similar issues, but they are both improving. Come to think of it, I've been wondering about my Pope John Paul II, which is in that bed too, and blooms okay, but is kind of a runt compared to the ones I've seen in pictures, I love it too, but also wish it was more vigorous....See MoreMoonstone or Francis Meilland?
Comments (17)Thanks Sara-Ann! But oh my gosh, six feet for both of you! I planted him by a pillar in case he got too big so as not to block the view. But too big to me meant 4 feet, yikes! Mine gets afternoon shade in current location. It sounds like I'll have to eventually move him so I wonder if he can handle 100+ degree full sun?...See MoreMy Francis Meilland has blind shoots
Comments (3)Oldrosarian, do blind shoots always remain blind? In your post you say " The other reason is that in a warm climate, when the weather is extra warm in the spring, the soil is rich and the rain helps things along, roses may make too many canes for them to support a flower. So they just don't make a bud. All you have to do is cut the cane back a few inches to the base of a leaf. Then the rose will make a bud." Now,in my garden, in my climate, in the very, very rare years when we are blessed with a rainy spring or better yet, summer, some of my roses just grow fantastically well and get huge, which I actually want them to do (I have a very large garden). But of course I want them to be able to flower well the following year. So, when it's time to prune, could I get away with just cutting back the youngest canes a bit? Or would you recommend a harder pruning?...See Morelola-lemon
