Trunk flare - where are you?!?

Hello. I am hoping you can give me some advice on removing girdling and adventitious roots from trees planted too deep - no trunk flare showing.

I have more photos that can be emailed. I could only upload 1.

  1. I have been removing soil to expose what I hope is the trunk flare. On some of the trees I have removed as much as 2-3 inches of soil and still have not found the trunk flare. What should I do?

In the process of finding the flare I will destroy a lot of the roots and once I find it, it will end up being like the tree is planted in a pit (3-4 inches below the soil level), is this okay?
  2. I am also finding there are many adventitious roots now exposed. Should I cut these and if I should remove them - when (time of year) and how?
  3. The Semi-dwarf river birch pictures looks like girdling to me, is it? Can I cut this root? If yes, when (now or spring) and where do I make the cut?

    Any other advice is appreciated.
