Exmark Quest any good?

My brother called and is interested in buying a zero turn mower. He saw an Exmark Quest 48" deck with a 22hp Briggs and straton that he is thinking of getting. He does not want to spend more than $4100.00. Are these any good?

He has 3 acres, front acre has a slight hill and the back two are relatively flat with a lot of young trees to mow around.

Would the Exmark be a good choice? Anything else that he should be considering instead considering the budget?

The quest is a very good machine it is identical to the laser except it is referred to as a residential machine rather than a commercial machine. The primary difference is that the laser has twin hydraulic drive pumps and the quest has one. I bought the quest when it first came out and have over 900 hrs on it. I have had very minimal repairs most of which were all on warranty. I have used practically every kind of machine and this brand far exceeds them all. And no the quest is a far cry from a toro timecutter. The timecutter is not a well built machine like the ex mark is even though they both come from the same company. I would buy another ex mark when I look for a replacement. As much as I dislike john deere for zero turns I would buy a Deere before I bought a toro.

Not familiar with that model however Exmark is a high quality brand. Is a servicing dealer easily accessible?

The quest is just a rebadge Toro Time cutter Z With a Briggs instead of a Kohler engine and if I remeber right cost a Little bit More than the Toro CounterPart (Toro is the parent company of Exmark). From first hand expirence The Toro's or the Exmarks are not very comfotable to ride on for any length of time. One summer I mowed 10 acres a week for a JD,Bocat&Exmark dealer my younger Brother worked at on a Exmark Lazer Z and my back was killing me all summer because of the ride. But they do have kits for the seat to make it more comfortable but even those were not that great. I would tell your brother to look at a Simplicity Javelin which has ride dampering springs on the front axle and Gives you a Great ride and they are priced from $3,399 to $3,999 avaliable in 38,44 and 50inch mowing decks. Anothe Brand to look at in his price range would also be the Cub Cadet Iseries Zero turn Tractors But for traditional Zero turns I will always say look at Simplicity or Ferris(Simplicity has been the Parent of Ferris for sevral years) just for the smooth ride.

No, not in my opinion. Its a one to two year old or older (design), the depreciation may be as high as 30% for the first year. So, lets say 6K minus 30% = 4.2K... I no not trust myself as I as cheap,etc. I do not trust the dealer, in selling, they cannot be totally honest. The selling price is more complex than I have stated. And what is a "Turf Tracer" , anyway ?? IMO, go for the Deere. Today, name brands mean nothing...

I am a former owner of the Exmark "Explorer" ZTR, The Exmark machines are sturdy good performing machines, but I have to warn you about the cost of replacement parts. If you have not purchased it yet, take a few minites at the parts counter to get an idea what you are getting into. If you have already bought one, pray it never breaks down. I switched to John Deere, if that gives you any idea of how expensive an Exmark is to maintain.

flylgw1, now that you add the results of this to the mix it does sound like the problem is in the ignition system. Kohler uses a fairly complex system on these engines and some are equipped with a Spark Advance Module (aka SAM). I have not ever had a chance to test out one of these systems but it sounds like the defective condition would be caused by the SAM as it only affects the running at lower RPM. I have no idea whether a defective SAM can affect only 1 or the other cylinders individually, but if it is possible for just one cylinder to be affected..........this may be what is going on here. I think the SAM must be able to control each cylinder individually rather than BOTH simultaneously, but I don't see that spelled out in the Kohler manual. Further, Kohler testing procedures outlined in Chapter 8 of the service manual refer to a Kohler proprietary electrical tester. Since it now seems certain that the engine is dying due to the loss of spark on one (or eventually) both cylinders, you will need to see if you can locate a Kohler service shop that has the Kohler test equipment to check the SAM. It might be faster (and cheaper) for you to remove the SAM yourself and carry it to that shop rather than haul the entire machine there. If all they have to do is put the SAM on a bench and hook up a meter they may jump right on it. If you take the whole machine to them you may have to "take a number and get in line". Maybe another member here knows of a poor boy way to test one, but I don't. Sorry for the bum steer on the carb. Back years ago I worked in a motorcycle shop and come spring time we would always get a good number of complaints about "It was running good when I parked last November, but now it won't idle. Runs good until you try to let it idle." Those complaints were always due to pilot jets clogged with varnish.

ted, you may get a response or two here, but most guys on this forum specialize in lawn/garden tractors and ride-ons, not zero-turns. I have a new ExMark Lazer C which is the bottom line commercial model they make. It is very solid construction and the ExMarks are the standard for the mowing services around here (lots of them.) I selected the Lazer over the Quest as the Lazers have hydraulic wheel motors vs. the Quest having the mechanical hydrostatic drives. I have the optional seat which was thrown in as part of a sales promo that was going on and I am pleased with the ride. The dampened steering on the ExMark makes things better too. My yard is very rough and I had a Gravely which I believe is made by Toro that was a killer ride. Dealer made me a good trade so I bit the bullet and got the commercial model.

I have the Exmark Phazer 44" to cut 3 acres which I can now do in 45 minutes as opposed to it taking 3.25 hours with my old Craftsman garden Tractor.

Have had mine 2 years with no complaints just change the oil every 25 hours & sharpen the blades every season..
