I can't give you a solid answer about your climate and size, but it definitely has the deeply veined rugosa leaves. I just got mine this summer. Kind of an experiment to see if it can handle my climate. I have to say that the blooms of this first year plant haven't held up to summer heat very well, but maybe that will improve with maturity. They last longer than the quick-blowing Scentimental, but they aren't nearly as full. Still, they have a pleasing, sweet clove-like scent to my nose. As far as size, the nursery I got mine from said it should grow about 4 feet, but very bushy and kind of rambling. So far, mine has grown out 3 main canes about 3 feet, with plenty of leaves. The plant doesn't seem phased by the heat, just the blooms. Already with the oppressive heat of August behind us, the blooms here are looking better.

One very important word of advice: get the BDdC grown on its own root. Mine is a beautiful bush - dimensions as above, but it was grafted on a wild rose root and so every year I must get down flat on my stomach and cut out the wild rose shoots that grow up through it. Nurseries do this NOT because the plant is not reliably hardy - the BDdC will grow in the Arctic! - but it is cheaper for them to graft a whole bunch of shoots on wild rose stock than to grow "own root" roses. If this was not such a fantastic bush, I would yank it out and get a new one on own root. Also, if you like rugosas, look for "Agnes" a yellow rugosa - smells wonderful - but very rarely reblooms. It was created here in Ottawa at the Experimental Farm. A lovely thing!

I have 4 rugosa rubra seedlings. I wintersowed them outdoors but they did not germinate until the second spring. They are about three years old and still have not budded. I am hoping I will see something this year. My BDdC was a very cheap bag rose and has done very well. It is often the first rose to bloom in my garden as it is this year. Some years it blooms all season and others it blooms lightly. So far mine has never set hips. I read some of them do. I also read that many do not like this rose because the spent blossom looks like used tissues. They prefer alba.

I've had two things happen that fall within this subject area: 1. Hybrid Rugosa cultivars sent from California grafted on apparently incompatible rootstocks rather soon dwindle away in subsequent years 2. An own root alba actually grow beneath 2 lanes of asphalt to pop up across the street. There is no question this was sucker growth and not a spontaneous seedling, because the shoots came out of the ground with too large of a stem diameter and growing too rapidly to be seedling development
