Would you recommend a HFGH?

Hi everyone, I'm researching greenhouses. I did a search for HFGH in the forums and I came up with lots and lots of both positive and negative feedback. I'm considering the 6x8 or the cold frame. What's your experience with them?

I have the 6x8 and like it.For the money you can't go wrong. I have no complaints but one. It is small but like everyone who responds it depends on your particular use in mind. I would spend a couple hundred more and get the 8x10.

Yes for the money it is good. You must do the extra work to make it work. Sherry's advice is great along with others depending upon your climate. We live in a harsh climate zone 4 lots of snow and wind this year and it is still standing yahoo! Thanks to everyone here. I would buy another one but I have hopes to have one like greenhousers next. The Rion.... If you have the money I would go with the Rion not that I dislike the HFGH I do like it alot. My neighbors son came over and looked at ours (they have a homemade leanto) They liked ours so much they went and bought one. You are in alabama so you will not have to worry about snow as much. What range/cooktop/ovens are you using? And would you recommend it?

When I built my dream kitchen, which I sadly had to sell due to my divorce, I used the following: GE 5 burner gas range. It was not a continuous grate burner so it wasn't as easy to move pots and pans around but it worked. If I were to do it again, I would look at Induction but, then I would have to replace all of my cookware. And I have a lot of money in my cookware. My wonderful ex-wife let me keep all the kitchenware. I would go with gas again, and with a 5 or 6 burner on a continuous grate cooktop. And, a separate wok burner. If I could afford it, I would go with Thermador as I like their star shaped burner. I had a GE Double Wall Oven. Both were electric and convection. Gas is a moist heat due to it's combustion and most baking needs dry heat. I would go with it again. And, I would look at a double door like the one above. Blodgett or similar. It makes more sense. I have OTC/OTR microwaves. I had the microwave in a cubby but it wasn't near the cooking area in that house. I would look at a drawer micro or mount it in a cabinet mid height. I would NOT get a Double Oven where one is a microwave. I only had one dishwasher in the old house. I would have two dishwashers in the new kitchen. One a standard dishwasher and one a drawer unit for quick wash like glasses, utensils, but NEVER knives. Knives need to be out of the way but accessible. In the old house, I just had them in a block. I know have them on the wall on a magnetic bar designed for knives. Much better. Another thing I would do in my new dream kitchen would be to move as much stuff off the counters as possible. And have more plug-ins. And more lighting. Those are my thoughts, from an amateur chef who has had recipe's published in popular magazines.

It looks like the stucco is coming off the brick. I would use a putty knife or chisel and try to remove the rest of it and then see what kind of shape the brick is in.

I would recommend it, BUT WITH CONDITIONS...you owe it to yourself to spend the time and effort to follow the construction advice of others on GW, including the reinforcement suggestions. I did NOT do all the rear wall reinforcements and those upper panels have blown out 2 times and once I lost several side panels when hurricane type winds passed through. Everything else has held up.

If you have a few grand or more to spend and money is not an issue for you, then I'd spend it and get a really great GH, if you dont and you really want a functional and good sized GH, then buy a HFGH and pay good attention to the structural enhancements necessary to give it the extra support it needs.

I have the smaller 6X8' HFGH and love it although there have been some minor issues with it.

For my serious greenhousing I use my larger Rion.

I love my HFGH's if I had to pay the price of some of the better ones I would not be able to have a greenhouse. So they are not for everyone but they do the job. I have really enjoyed having them. But than in Florida I don't need to heat as much as some where else. I grow orichds and furns. Start seeds in spring and fall. Veg and flowers.
Having a gh is a lot of work to keep everything going, but anything worth having is work.

Ah a zone 4 person just like me. I wouldnt give up my HFGH for anything. For working class people like myself we can afford it. I reinforced anywhere I could. There are pictures posted on the forum. We even tied our big heavy homemade shelves into the wall to hold it steady. You cant even move the wall. LOL. My fiance even made a snow brace in case we needed it. We are in process of making shelves for the other side and will tie that into the other wall. For the money and time invested go for it they are not bad to look at either...... I think from my reading of previous posts about HFGH's, most of the modifications for strength are with the 10x12. The 6x8 is smaller but can withstand the elements better I believe.

You need to reinforce the 6x8 as well. The FAQ is just for the 10x12.

I have to agree with many of the previous posters that the 6x8 is a decent greenhouse for the money. If I had a "few grand" to spend on a greenhouse, yes, I'd go for a larger, higher quality structure ... but I don't, and I've found my little 6x8 quite satisfactory and faring very well without additional structural reinforcement (although we don't get much snow here in a seaside zone 7). You may wish to consider the 8x10, which I've been thinking seriously about moving up to, but have not seen any reviews on it yet. A lot depends on what you want to use this structure for ... and, more difficult to predict, what you will end up using it for.

If you are "handy" or your spouse is then I'd recommend a HFGH simply because they are so affordable. They do require modifications and a foundation though.

There is no way I could have afforded a better quality greenhouse and two years later I'm still very pleased with mine.

Would you recommend a HFGH?
