Ohmygosh! I NEVER thought about the effect of sunlight on the placement of the intake vents/exhaust fan thermostat! My new GH is finished, at least to the point of being sealed, except for the frames we will add around the intake vents and exhaust fan and have rather abandonded it for the present, as we hustle to get our fall yard and field work done while the Sun shines, which it hasn't for much of the past month. But we do have electricity into the GH, so even when it turns really cold, we can still work inside of it and one of the questions has been the placement of the thermostats. Now I've been warned about the one for the vents/fan, I'll be sure to mount it in a shaded location, but what about the thermostat for the heater? My best sense tells me it should be mounted by the north facing door at the opposite end of the GH from the heater, because even with the intake vents and exhaust fan closed for the winter, the roof vents will still release excess heat. Yes? No?

When we remodeled the kitchen in our 1978 ranch three summers ago, we added a wall between the kitchen and the family room. It was completely open before, with only a 6" step down delineating the two rooms. Now we have about 7 ft of full wall, another 7 to 8 ft of a half wall, and 4 ft of ramp. No more falling out of the kitchen! We were not really looking to add wall. Our set of gently used cabinets that I used in the new kitchen design had a corner double oven cab. I used it as a corner raised dishwasher cab with a shelf for a microwave above the DW. Next to it was a 36" wide pantry cab. Then we had the desk unit that came with the kitchen. My carpenter/builder saw that putting a wall behind this line of cabs was just natural, and he was right. Before, with only a plywood backing between us and the dishwasher, even our quiet Bosch made noise. Now we do not hear it at all. The wall also gave us a place for two new electrical outlets in the family room and two new outlets for the desk area in the kitchen. The person working at the kitchen island can still see the TV. It only takes a slightly raised voice to converse between the two rooms. DH likes the desk, as he can see into the family room with a simple raising of his head, and the TV is right there for him, too. So when he is working late on something that needs partial attention, he can watch the baseball game or talk to me, as well. Visually, the clutter of each room remains in its own space. Before, even a straightened set of rooms seemed visually cluttered just because you saw the side tables, easy chairs, lamps, magazine rack, kitchen chairs, buffet, and table all in the same glance. mimalf - When I introduced myself on the thread called "Caught the Hoya bug" about a month ago, I put a picture of my new GH with my new 40 plants - much like yours. That might be the thread you are thinking of that had the greenhouse. I live in very high humidity (Juneau Aalska) but rather liked how it held the heat in. All I did was heavy mist every morning and later in the day I opened the door for 20 minutes so air moved - then a heavy misting again. Jan recommended this - and my plants are doing well. I am leaving the door open now for about 3 hours everyday. This has worked great for me. Love how it looks! Robin

Okay, I can see where the confusion came from. I still can't find that thread on zero-clearance doors, but even with a zero clearance door swing to the right, you would still have the interior door framing for the door bins blocking removal of the right hand crisper drawer if you can't get the door to swing past 90°. That seems to be true whether you go with a 36" wide zero-clearance FD model (assuming one can be found) or with a 33" model that looks like the picture you posted above. (Which, incidentally, looks exactly like my KitchenAid.) Anyway, you may need to check your notes because I cannot find any current free-standing single-door bottom freezer fridges that are 36" wide. The biggest ones all seem to be in the 33" class and they all seem to have projecting door handles and door storage bins. Could not find any 36" wide SDBF models when I checked the Whirlpool website as well as AJ Madison who seems to have pretty much every model currently made. FWIW, in the 33" wide class, the FD and SDBF models come off the same assembly lines and differ mainly in how they hang the doors. There really isn't any significant difference in capacity. There are 36" wide FD models with larger capacity but there don't seem to be any free-standing SDBF equivalents that I can find in that size. Seems like a Hobson's choice. With an SDBF, you can swing the door to the right against your side wall, which would give you ready access from the fridge to the left-side counter but leaves you with the problem of not being able to take out the right-side crisper drawer. Mount the door to swing to the left and you solve the drawer removal problem but pretty much block easy access for taking things from the fridge to put them on the counter next to it (or vive versa when bringing groceries to it). With a FD model, you get the drawer problem with only some of the blockage problem. Is there a counter or island opposite the fridge. FWIW, I just did a little experiment with my 33"-wide FD fridge. I wondered if it might it might be possible to get enough of an angle on the right door by leaving off the projecting door handle. I found that with the door swung a little over 2 inches wider, and, if I pulled the left hand crisper drawer first, then it was just just barely possible to wiggle the right crisper drawer past the bin framing. That's a real kludge. You'd be limited to a 33" wide FD model and would have to keep an allen (hex) wrench handy to remove and replace the right door handle whenever you needed to remove that right hand crisper drawer. Maybe with enough responsive postings now, we'll attract the attention of somebody with better information.
