New and learning - please review my compost bin plans

Hello,

DH and I are going to start composting this spring. We have LOTS of yard clippings, leafs and garden waste/weeds. We used to just pile everything in the corner of our property or try to bag them for town pickup. We've decided to start actively composting instead of just dumping or bagging the stuff. When we went to the old pile we found black soil underneath it. Is this compost? Can I use this on my garden? Is this what the ultimate goal is?

Here is our bin plan. Please let me know what your thoughts are. We got 4 sheets of vinyl lattice.

We are going make a square out of the 4 pieces. One piece will be on a hinge so that the bin will have a door for ease of turning/filling/removing. There will not be a bottom or top. Will this work? Oh, we also found a lot of worms in the old heap, so I'm assuming they will help quite a bit.

I read the FAQ on this forum. It was excellent. I can't wait to get started!
