when you plant it in the ground, put it where it will get full sun. If it is a climber, that place should also be next to something it can climb on, like a fence or building. Then, don't be surprised if it takes a while to recuperate, and start putting out new canes. At first the canes may be short - don't worry about that. Climbers take a while to start putting out real climbing canes. Pls post pictures of it next Spring, especially blooms, and someone on here may be able to identify it for you. Also I want to agree with everyone that I am amazed it is still alive, as roses HATE being indoors! Jackie

Well, RR, where do I begin? First off, where did you get those seeds? Ebay, perchance? I hate to break it to you but you may well have been scammed. There are some very unscrupulous dealers on there and others who bought seeds this way ended up with anything from roses to radishes. You need to know that roses DO NOT grow true to variety from seeds. There are a very few exceptions in the wild rose category that will self seed and grow true but all other varieties, especially modern hybrid tea roses like Osira, do not. Each individual seed will be it's own new variety. It may look similar to either of it's parents or it may look like any of the roses that went into the parents breeding but it will not be the same rose. So Osira seeds will not grow Osira rose bushes. The only ways to to grow roses true to their original variety is by rooted cuttings or bud grafting. Basically cloning. Secondly, not knowing exactly what your growing set up is, I will tell you that, for the most part, roses HATE to be inside. It is very difficult to produce the right temperature, humidity and light combination that will make them happy and thrive. I have tried many things and never succeeded in keeping even the small mini roses alive indoors for more than a couple of months. Barely long enough for winter to end and I can plant them outside.where they immediately perk up. I do hybridize roses and start my seedlings in January inside under lights during the winter. But as soon as it's warm enough for them to go outside they do! Sometimes that's as early as March if at all possible. They always struggle until they get out in natural sunshine and humidities and then they take off like gangbusters! I will congratulate you on your success, Richard. Your window looks quite large - almost floor to ceiling? And the exposure (south east) is the perfect one. Temps are very good and your humidity level is actually quite high for many indoor heated homes in winter. I've seen people struggle to keep the humidity at 30% and often it can get as low as 20! So at 40%, your rose is in a good place. No one guaranteed that you would contract spider mites indoors, but in a very dry environment, it is quite likely. You've escaped that pest it seems - lucky you! :-) So, yes, it can be done and it is good to hear of your happy Dick Clark. But I still would caution readers that it is NOT always 'just that easy.' I have seen some pretty sad roses posted by people who didn't know any better and were trying to get them through the winter inside their house. Hence the source of those warnings. OTOH, I've seen a few successes posted like yours as well, my own included...but I DID have to "baby" my potted roses (Teas, grown in zone 4) by moving them to the shower every single week through the winter to keep spider mites at bay. And although mine were in front of a pair of double hung windows that faced south, the Low-E glass cut some of the sunlight and it wasn't quite enough for them so I had to supplement with a fluorescent fixture hung just above them. That was my experience, for what it's worth. Glad you are finding wintering your potted rose baby much, much easier. :-) Anne

Is it possible to grow roses indoors? I'd say yes, with some major caveats. It won't be cheap and it won't be easy. I grow orchids, and I start rose cuttings with my orchids in orchidarium, which is indoors. I've grown those cuttings on, to some degree. The first hurdle is to provide enough light. When I mean enough light, I mean more light than even high-light cattleya orchids require. Keeping in mind that direct sunlight is 10,000 ft-candles, to grow a rose, you'd need to produce (my guess) at least 5-6,000 ft candles of light. This would be about 2 feet away from a 1,000 watt halogen bulb, which is about the size of a street lamp halogen. The new LED lights may be able to provide it at a lower energy cost. I tried one a few years ago, and it was a bunch of hype that didn’t work to grow even my low light orchids, but technology has improved since then. Okay, so this is roughly equivalent to shaded outdoor area, which as we know is enough to grow a rose (sort-of), but not enough to for it to bloom well. So you’d need to double that. I’ll let you figure out how much in your area that would be for electricity, because you’d want to run the lights at least 10 hours a day. Another thing to keep in mind is that the grow lights are of specific spectrum, so if you want normal colors you’d have to choose full spectrum lights. (Aside: this would include UV, which we know is part of tanning and promotes skin cancer and can damage the eyes, so you’d want to wear sunglasses and sunscreen, just as if you were gardening outdoors.) Then there is the issue of heat. The lights would generate heat, and the fans that are in many units help with that, which also would raise the temperature of the room. You might need some air conditioning in the room in the summer, or leave a window open in the winter, although you’d have to be careful not to let it get too cold at night. Having the days bright and warmer, and cooler and dark at night is good for orchids, I’m not sure if that is needed for roses. My roses seem to do best at temperatures lower, especially at night, than I typically keep my house and warmer during the day, like 50-60 F at night and 80F in the day. If you didn't want to induce dormancy, then you'd be best growing roses like Tea roses, which can grow in tropical areas. Something I’ve learned from growing cuttings indoors is that roses, like orchids, need air movement. Without it, too much light will burn the leaves, but perhaps most importantly they will be very prone to fungal diseases like mildew. So you’d want another fan to keep the air moving over the leaves. For a full size rose, you’d also need the space, and enough light units to cover the area of growth. Basically, you are trying to duplicate the conditions that the roses like, i.e. recreating the outdoors, but indoors. This would mean an appropriately sized room with full sun conditions, and air movement, enough root room (i.e. at least a 20 gallon container), certain humidity, watering and fertilizer. It’s doable, as you can see from greenhouse grown florist roses. You’d just have to have the space, energy and finances to create such a place.
