To rototill or not to rototill.
Comments (6)Grassman - Some follow-up on my previous post. Great idea to get the soil test. So many people neglect to do that. Amend your soil PH as necessary. I discouraged you to rototill 2 or 3 inches of compost into your soil for several reasons. 1. Compost continues to decompose, it essentially disappears. That could leave you with a rough and bumpy lawn. 2. Tilling brings up tons of weed seeds that you donÂt want. 3. You are talking about a tremendous amount of physical work here. Not only is it possible to overdress every year, but it is the best thing you can do for your lawn and gardens. Sprinkle compost on any problem areas you have several times a year if you can. Go ahead and use starter fertilizer and a good pre-emergent herbicide in the spring. If you do decide to go organic next year, then soil PH, and NPK will take care of themselves without any amendment necessary, thus reducing the need or relevance of further soil testing. One other thing you should know, top dressing is optional when you plant grass seed. ItÂs highly recommended, but you can have excellent results without topdressing. Just keep it moist....See MoreParts for a very old Troy Built rototiller
Comments (10)I have a wizard-western auto supply company tiller. Model number GIS 212OA28 and serial number 2049C1 639. Looking at modle number, this tiller is a toro product. The pulleys and the keyways are fine. The problem is the gear drive contained in the plastic housing that drives the wheels. I take it is a gear drive, but i guess it could be a chain drive. Something broke inside platic housing that looks like it is riveted together. Has anyone ever taken this out and removed rivets and then bolted it back together after finding out what the problems is. Has anyone had a problem like this and what did you find it to be. Wish it wasted a composite housing. let me know thanks....See MoreOld rototiller put out with a 'Free' sign
Comments (11)Don't know anything about the tiller. Clinton looks like a 494 or 498. Probably has Walbro carb, which I never did like. If it were mine, I'd replace the Walbro with a Carter "N" from a K series Kohler. Save yourself a lot of frustration. The 494 (8 CID)and 498 (10 CID) were made in the early sixties and replaced older 1100 and 1200 models. These were among the last cast iron engines Clinton built....See Moreold montgomery wards rototiller
Comments (6)Kind of hard to help you if you don't enable the email feature on Garden Web. Bill is right about the belts. The v-belt trade sizes are 3L370 for the reverse belt and 4L350 for the forward belt. The Gilson manual is 12 pages in PDF format....See Moresuedenathotmail
