Totally new to roses, need all kinds of advice

Hello. I have never planted roses before. I am doing some research to get all my info together to buy and plant some roses later in April. First, I think I am in zone 7. I live on the eastern shore of Maryland. If this zone is wrong, please let me know. I have tons of questions and thoughts so I think I'll just number them and if you can answer any I would appreciate it. Here they are:

1. What red roses are the most fragrant, yet easiest to grow. I cannot grow climbers, but I am going to plant several rose shrubs.

2. I have heard of Belinda's dream rose as being easy, but pink. Also, Mr. Lincoln sounds easy, but red. Are either of these recommended for a newbie?

3. How do I prepare the soil for a new rose planting? Right now, I have to dig up grass and make a spot for the bushes.

4. Are any specific (yet cheap) fertilizers or soil reccommended?

5. Are Lowes or Home Depot roses okay?

This is just the first of many questions. Any suggestions or ideas is appreciated. I have no clue about roses so ANY help is appreciated. Thank you.

Carol
