Do you ever feel guilty!

I had some rogue canes on baltimore belle and quadra, since Im using them more as climbers then as big shrub, I took out some living canes today.

All I could think about was the blooms I wont see on them !

Overall, the effect is a much neater area, but alas, that was probably a good 200 blooms I just cut out!

For roses that aren't great repeat bloomers, it's not a bad idea to wait until after the first flush, unless there is a pressing reason.

Silverkelt, I had the same thoughts today. I was thinning out Champagne Arches/Nancy Parker today (actually two of them - one on each side of the arch) and tying the best canes back onto the arch. Then I gave the last waving laterals a bit of a haircut. Today's action was prompted by a comment my DS made last weekend when we were walking in the garden. I stopped and looked back at that arch and tried to see it through his eyes - yup, it WAS just a mess. I know it would have been best to wait and enjoy those several hundred extra blooms, but I would never have been able to see what I needed to see in order to prune it properly. While Michael is technically correct, it is so much easier to deal with these large roses before they are fully leafed out. Actually, I wish I had had the time to do it before it broke dormancy, but I didn't lose too many tender leaf buds so I'm just relieved to have the job done! I am consoling myself about the lost first blooms by thinking how much easier it will be to prune again lightly after the first flush which should stimulate it to set some more buds later in the season. And NOT seeing those canes waving 3 and 4 ft. above the arch is very satisfying. I can't wait to hear what my son says when he visits on Sunday!

I'm a married man with a 10 week old child and a shih tzu. I do dishes, laundry, take out the trash, mow the yard, keep a fruit and vegetable garden, build and fix whatever, work over 40hrs a week, and try to keep "MY" flower beds looking decent lol. My wife could care less most days if the yard was mowed or if the flower beds looked like anything. For some reason I have a crazed anxious urge to stay on the move all the time. I very rarely crash and take lazy days, even though the laziness is well deserved and well needed. I love more than anything to mow the grass and to garden in the flower beds. I'm always feeling guilty that it just isn't right. Bare spots here and there in the grass, a few weeds in the flower beds, flowers in the wrong spot, more to buy, more to plant, more more more to split and give away.... lots of it is overwhelming. And at times I feel stressed and guilty over all of it, possibly that I'm neglecting something.. maybe my wife and child lol. My urges lie in the progression of everything else...but then again I'm human and more precisely a man lol so go figure. I never claimed to be romantic =P

When you are a traveling sales rep, you get over it in hurry. Funny story - one time I had to go pretty bad. I stopped at a convenience store (that had sit-down eating booths) and the girl told me the bathrooms were around back...port-a-potties. Oh Yea, my favorite! Well, it was an emergency. So I opened the door and it was FILTHY! I walked right back in and asked very politely if they had an indoor facility. (I REALLY had to go by now.) There was absolutley no way I could get back in the car, I HAD to resort to drastic measures, and this is where politeness took a detour. Well, she told me there was no others except for employees. (remember I am desperate here...) I told her state law requires eating establishment to have a public restroom and if the ones out back were it, I was going to call for an inspector. Long story short, I did use the "employee only" room successfully, I did go ahead and buy a soda (or something) and I did NOT call the inspector That type of behavior is totally not normal for me, but I cannot remember a single time when I needed it more! LOL

mldao, I have to learn some of your patience. I make decisions too quickly and then regret them ALL THE TIME. Good luck with your pain colors, I am sure they will look beautiful. Thanks for sharing all your wise advice. I will try to slow things down but I really need some paint and a dining room set. lol.. Love the piggy bank idea. If I said to my husband I am making the house beautiful for you he would say it is fine just the way it is. I want to retire early.. lol.. ahh! can't complain, he is pretty good. Thanks folks, I have a sack of about 10 different 1/4 yd cuts that I've bought/ordered/lived with. I had them all up for varying lengths of time from hours to overnight to days. Hubby is sooooooo over it. Every time I tried a bright color it just looked off to me. Once I put a big, bold pattern in it just clicked better. I actually really like the same pattern in blue over the sink, but when it's in the eating area it's not quite right. So essentially I think I'm ready to go neurotic but not quite certifiable crazy yet. I'm going to accessorize with a lot of blue but if I decide to go back to red or yellow or orange in the future, a can of spray paint solves the issue. This thread has also made me love suzani now. :) The eyebrow comment is valid and definitely makes me think. I've got one more fabric store to visit today, but at that point I think I have to make a call of some kind. I could put this off for months if I let myself.

I would have taken them out but I would have probably tried rooting those canes too, lol!
