Your plant is kalanchoe blossfeldiana. It will naturally bloom in late winter/early spring. Growers manipulate the amount of light at other times to cause it to bloom. They know we're much more likely to buy a blooming plant. It comes in many colors.

Hi Plant Wizard, thank you for your response. I suppose they could be Calla Lilies, but they don't have the traditional wavy kind of edge on the leaves nor any spots that I am used to seeing. I guess those are just one variety. Anyway, thanks so much- I'm excited now because these are pretty hefty, hearty plants in pots! Time will tell I guess. I'll come back and let you know if they bloom.

Great plant and as treefrog said it's a wonderful fall bloomer. I have seen them up at Valkaria gardens over 8' tall as a small tree, very nice. Scott

I know of these but didn't know the name so thanks for that info fawnridge. On one that was growing by the railroad tracks near me I snapped off some of the flowers ( blubs I guess you could call them - before they open ) and put them into a vase and they opened and lasted a week and were pretty in my house. They have an interesting scent. I think you will either like it or not like it. I'm so so about it. It seems from what I've noticed with these that they only flower here and there ( not all year ) Right now my neighbors one is flowing nice with pink/whitish flowers
