Using a screen in window......

We just put together a HFGH so lots of questions. To help keep out the MN airforce (mosquitos), I was wondering about installing some screening material over the roof window opening and the wall louvers (we installed the louvers). What do you all think?

It will work. But it may slow down the incoming air a bit.
Go with the largest mesh size you can get by with and still catch the mosquitos. Don't use the tightly woven nylon that is almost solid.

I'll second what cactusfreak wrote. The finer the mesh; the quicker the screen becomes clogged with dirt and dust.

You do not mention how tall the dbl hungs are but if you can get awnings that are the same height, you can use a 2" simulated dived lite bar and make them appear as dbl hungs. Of course they will look similar not exact as this will be one piece of glass on the same plane as opposed to 2 dbl hung sash. I have seen this done many times with casements in upstairs bedrooms to meet the newer egress codes without have to go to a 5'10"(I believe) dbl hung height.

chicken wire or 1/4" wire mesh is better- the window screening is rarely just metal any more, and the mesh is so fine that it tends to separate the layers of concrete, rather than hold it together, and the two halfs will tend to delaminate. I cut out fun shapes from screening, and seal the edges with silicone caulk and sprinkle them with glitter...they make great little ornaments (or stitch two together and fill them with clove buds, then seal)

Since you're only looking for a temporary solution on occasion, and you do have a nice sized sill, and you only need to cover the bottom portion of the window for privacy, I'd make a panel to put on the sill in front of each window. You can get a styrofoam sheet from the home store, cut it to fit. Then you can wrap it like a present in fabric, and just pin the fabric to the backside into the styrofoam to hold it using t pins. You can wrap the styrofoam first with batting to make it look more quilted or not. You can then even pin or glue some trim onto the front to dress it up or not. Or you can pleat the fabric as you pin it to make it fancier. The panels will be lightweight, store flat and can color coordinate with your room. Just rest them on the sill and lean it on the window. You can make them as high as you want, even cover the window entirely. They go away easily and won't damage your lovely woodwork.

Another quarantine project -I actually just had new screens made at our local hardware store. Ours were thirty years old, some frames were a bit bent, some screening was torn, etc. They were a bargain and look amazing now! IdaClaire, I don't think you need a special tool. This took us a while to learn, but now we are fast at removing our screens. Heres's what you do: Using the two tabs along the bottom edge of the screen, pull STRAIGHT up vertically. Visualize sliding the top edge of the screen into the recess of the frame above it. There are small springs in the top edge of the screen frame that keep them wedged into the frame, and when you lift straight up, those springs compress and you gain a half-inch or so of space at the bottom of the screen. Then lift the bottom edge of the screen out and over the tiny metal lip that holds the screen in. Now you can angle the bottom out and slide the screen down and out. Hope that helps.

I'm wanting to put screen in my door. The door needs to be open for the air to circulate in the summer but the blasted cats that roam everywhere won't stay out.

I've also been having a problem with carpenter bees drilling holes in my shelving. I don't mind the drain holes so much but the mess they leave on the shelf underneath the hole is ticking me off. LOL

Thanks for the tips on the type of screen to use.

Also I never thought about the bees, and have plenty of them in the yard, and don't want to be fighting them in my little green house.

I use screening on every entrance and exit in my greenhouse. I hate the wasps and bees.

I hate 'em too. I'd rather be a screener than a screamer.

4 Windows, roof vent and a full-length panel that removes with screen behind. Only opening left is the door, it gets a screen this season.

I bought one of the foggers for the skeeters two years ago. Once a week, I just fog the greenhouse and it keeps the population down, I also burn the skeeter sticks, I recently read that they hate the smell of sandlewood, so I bought a small inscence burner and fire up, LOL.....

hmmmm... an inscence burner, brings me back to my youth. I think I will try that too, along with screens. The dollar store is a cheap place to get inscence.
