drive idle spring

I have an old Simplicity Model # 1691899 and it would not go into drive. I took out the cover to check the drive belt and discovered that the spring had broken off the idle pulley.

I bought another one part # 1727149SM but can't figure out how it goes back on.

The idle pulley has a hole in it so I know one end goes there but the other end has me stumped.I don't know where to connect it.

The online manual that I was looking at said connect to frame.

Any help would be appreciated.

leoj: I tried to look up your model number, and it comes out to a snow blower. Is this correct? Please advise.

If by chance this is a mower (wrong model number given), look for a metal loop near the back of the tractor. I had the same thing happen to Simplicity garden tractor. It baffled me until I crawled under the tractor with the mower off. With a flashlight, I actually found the other end of the spring still in the metal loop that was welded to the frame. Just something to check. Even if this is a snow blower, you can check for a metal loop also.

Well, it's like this. I usually replace the tranny if they want it repaired. ~ 60$ if I remember correctly. You may even be able to source it cheaper on Ebay. Just get the proper #. A poster here before couldn't figure out his drive issue after installing a transmission- and he was sent a rwd trans and his was a fwd unit- and it turned backwards! I believe that Toro services the gears and bushings separately- which are the right parts you need. It isn't a hard repair, clean up is the worse part. There wouldn't be much inside other than the parts described above and a gasket, possibly seals. You will want to know that the shaft isn't worn where it is supported by the pivot arm and of course that the bearings there seem fine. Here is a link that might be useful: Toro parts and manuals

That may be normal. Just how high is it? In cold weather, it might go to 1200 rpm at first start and then pull back to 900 rpm in the next few seconds. After a few minutes, it should settle to about 700 rpm. If the engine hits 2000 rpm on startup and is too slow in reducing speed, it needs attention. This assumes it was started with your foot off the accelerator and allowing the engine controller to control the process. Also, you may note this happening in cold weather: The idle speed increases slightly when the gear selector is moved from park or neutral to any gear. What's happening is this (for automatic transmissions): When the transmission is put into gear from neutral, the engine controller increases the idle speed a bit to compensate for the extra drag put on by the transmission. If the transmission is a little slow in engaging, the engine will speed up and then drop back in rpm as the transmission cluthes fully engage. This effect is less noticable after the transmission fluid warms and the shift from neutral to a gear quickens. The effect is more noticeable with transmissions that have accumulated wear on shifting valve seals and clutch facings.

miss at idle: again

sparkplugs? caddy with northstar. did headgaskets 2yrs ago. put in single tip platinum autolites. not ac-delco dbl platinum's. so i put them in and miss is 90% gone. not perfect but close to it. old plugs were gray and dry. don't think it is injector related.

You are in the right forum. Sometimes when a person is trying to phrase their posting, they forget to add little details like "what the object is". But you included the OEM name and model number, which turned out to be sufficient for windcatcher (to raise the question). Be patient and I'm sure someone will provide a definite solution to the question of where the spring is anchored.

Ahhh-But, to work with this equipment, you must develop much patience, or yer head will hurt from bangin' it against the wall!

Hi Leo.

I looked at the Simplicity manuals http://www.simplicitymfg.com/document/index.cfm?doc=TP_400_1158_02_LW_S_LO.pdf
and I found a couple of springs, but the search function didn't find the 1727149SM number you posted. I know to ignore the SM, so that isn't the problem.

In looking at the transmission drive group, it says, "hook long end of spring onto top hole of pivot arm assembly and short end into hole in frame".

In the Engine and Frame Group, it says, "hook top end of spring over clutch rod assembly between depressions and the other end into slot on frame."

I did find one more spring in the Engine and frame group: "Hook top end of spring in the top hole of the idler arm (see ref number 11) and the other end into top hole of the pivot arm assembly. (ref number 25 of traction and drive group.)

Now then, I'm aware that some part numbers can be superseded by another part number, so there may be some confusion there too.

I do not have any experience with snow blowers as we just don't get that much snow where I live. But, I've learned how to decipher some of the Simplicity manuals because I own one of their garden tractors.

If you could give us a better idea of the area you're looking for, I might be able to locate it in the Simplicity manual.

Otherwise, look in the areas described, and hope like the dickens you can find the other end of the broken spring in the hole/slot, or even a bit of a wear mark like paint missing. Sometimes those subtle clues can tell you a lot.

If you could post a photo of the spring and the area it came from, that would also be a great help.
