Hybrid Tea Roses

My neighbor gave me a Hybrid Tea Rose and I was going to ask when the best time to plant it. It is in a package and it is still green of course. I was wondering, since I don't have very much space should I put it in a pot or try to grow it in the ground somewhere? I rent and there is not much room around the house that is not covered with trees. I thought if I put it in a pot I could move it where it would get the sun it needs. It is a peace rose and I would really love to grow it. Also, will it bloom this summer or will it wait a year?

It will bloom this year if you plant it right away. Don't leave it in the bag too long. It will also defoliate with black spot if you don't spray - it's very disease prone unless you're in a very dry climate. Pretty rose.

Becky, Thank you for posting. the two-toned rose is 'Double Delight' not strong color because it was a rainy day and other are Evelyn, Jude the Obscure, Othello, Golden Celebration and unknow white Climbing rose also unknow hybrid tea roses.

I can't help with advice on posting pictures, but maybe asking some more questions might help? eg: In what way does it look like St Patrick - bloom and bud form and colour (minus green tint) only, or the whole plant - overall habit, leaf colour and texture, prickles, etc? I'm not familiar with St Pat, but is it possible it could actually BE St Pat, just not currently showing its green tint?

Thanks, Hoang Ton. I have to defend Julia Child (I have three; two are 16 years old, grafted, and one is five years old and own root). Natureinspired - I tried your suggestion and yes it’s more fragrant in the morning! I would describe the fragrance intensity on a similar level as Bolero or Munstead Wood but lacks the complexity of either…no rich base or wafting high notes. It’s a very familiar hybrid tea / florist rose scent. The young growth is definitely red. Your bloom looks like a different petal count though…or there variation with Mr. Lincoln’s petal count? I also took a photo of the underside of the leaf. It’s pale and the leaves closer to the base of the plant have a bit of a reddish tinge to the underside. There are no other buds do I couldn’t get a picture of that but I’ll see if it sets hips later and get a photo. Rosecanadian - Maybe in our climates Mr. Lincoln stays small and not as fragrant as for people more south. I recall seeing somewhere (maybe on HMF) that Mr. Lincoln is listed as zone 7(????)…how are we growing them then? I don’t winter protect any of my roses at all.

Read the thread that Hrose posted. It has a lot of good info in it. I've added an easier link to it below.

Get it out of the bag right away and carefully take off all the saw dust stuff it's packed in. Put it in a bucket of water to soak. It can stay in the bucket for a number of days until you get whatever you need and be OK. Make sure you get a BIG pot! A full size hybrid tea rose like Peace needs a lot of root room.

If shade is a big problem then, yes, I'd pot it and keep it in the sun. If it doesn't get enough sun it will not be healthy and will not bloom properly. Roses need a minimum of 6 hours of full sun and prefer 8 hours to really perform well.

If they need 8 hours of sun, then I have the perfect place for it. It is where I planted the Rose of Sharon that died, it gets a lot of sun and drains well. I have it soaking in a can of water and am thinking of planting it today. I have a large container of potting soil and I am going to dump that into the hole and put the rose on top of that, does that sound like a good idea?

I went ahead and planted the rose in front of the house, it gets a lot of morning sun there. I put the rest of the potting soil in the hole with the dirt and put the rose on top of it. When do you think I will see any growth? My neighbor planted one just like it and his had green leaves on it already and he got his the same time as mine, will that make any difference?
