In Praise of Dr. Robert Korns

This is a Musk I ordered, potted him up and now he has loads of tiny white blooms that start out pale pink and the bush looks very healthy and vigorous. As if all this wasnt enough......the Dr. has the sweetest scent - I was sitting near the little potted band and smelled this wonderful scent coming from these tiny little blooms. I read it likes shade more than some other musks. I really like this rose - was wondering if anyone else grows it. I would like to know how big the bush gets, any other information about it. Should be more widely grown and hope I will encourage someone to buy it!

A great many people would recognize it more quickly under its original name: "Aptos."
A very rare and lovely rose.
I have just a tiny young plant.

Jeri, thanks for chiming in. I just planted mine in the ground this afternoon. It is blooming its head off, and it just arrived a few weeks ago. Very strong plant, just took off. Didnt know it was Aptos...Hope to hear from othres who grow it. How big will this one get?

I agree that it is a wonderful thing to honor someone you love. The only thing that is difficult is when a name is changed after it has been in commerce as something else for a while. I think it often causes a little confusion. At least this one hasn't been widely available under the name Aptos. I have a baby (big baby) band that I received this year. I'm delighted to have it but heaven knows where I am going to put it! I wish vendors would list a rose under all of the names it is known by. That would be most helpful. Carol

Stephanie, Feel free to come by and see first hand what some relatively young plants on your list look like in a no spray garden. Also, many of them you can take cuttings of...You can see my roses at their absolutely worst...and compare to what you saw in the spring. Thanks, all. EvS and Otto Linne both remind me of what little I've seen of my new Pomponella. It's early for me to have an opinion about Pomponella though. Looking at pics on hmf of Pax and Prosperity it does look to me like Prosperity may have more petals and sometimes has a blush of pink in the centers. But most often it is pure white, and most often the form is semi -double. It's a vigorous shrub. I'm curious about whether Clytemnestra and Nymphenburg are similar to Felicia. I have a trade in the works for a Walferdange plant this spring. Have wanted that one awhile. A lot of the hybrid musks are vigorous and take up a lot of room. My Lavender Lassie in the tree seems to have overextended itself. It has had major die back for some reason....maybe voles. Most of what was in the tree is gone but there is a good bit left of the plant. Mine can defoliate in mid to late summer too. One thing great about this site and hmf is the variety of pics, the good , bad, and ugly. The less wonderful shots help quite a bit too. Prosperity looking more typical, less glam:

Hi, Stephanie. I live in Eastern TN on a hillside in the foothills of the Smoky Mtns. My soil type isn't unusual here: https://utcrops.com/soil/soil-fertility/soil-ph-and-liming/ but might be uncommon elsewhere. This probably tells you more than you wanted to know. I don't like the smell of paperwhites either but I don't think that's a myrrh fragrance. To me, it smells like someone using a perfumed aerosol spray to cover the smell of rotting meat. I wonder what pollinator it's trying to attract? On the other hand, some of the old-fashioned daffodills have a lovely (to me) fragrance. I grow a variety called Lent lilies here in the South. They look like a smaller, earlier, less spectacular version of modern trumpet daffs but are still lovely and smell nice.

I hear it is - ahem - VIGOROUS. I'm expecting eight feet by eight feet, at least, here in Sacramento where roses get big. Mine is starting its third season, starting from a tiny little band, and now filling the back corner with six-ft-long arching canes. It's going over two neighbor's fences, and they assure me that they don't mind at all....

Well, then, if we end up having to run a fence down one side of our hillside, that would likely be a good place for it.
Sounds like it can contribute to a living privacy screen.

When & Why did they change the name of the rose. BTW I have just about the oldest one around. Got it at a rose auction held in CA about 6 years ago and heard that the mother plant was destroyed fairly soon afterwords.

How Big - By a 4 ft tall chain link fence - no training - just doing it's own thing - goes up at least 6 ft high and then cascades down the other side and touches the ground. Dense, Dense, Dense and it's about 8 ft wide.

I think I had better move the Doctor.......if he gets this big, he will eat up the space I planted him. I will plant him in the front yard, plenty of room to arch and sprawl. Mine shows no apricot at all.....new buds are pink and open to white.

I have no idea why or how the Mother plant was destroyed but the last time I talked to Jim Delehanty (sp) please forgive me for the spelling, he told me that it was gone. He didn't tell me why or how just that it was gone.
