Olga, it would be wonderful to see pictures of these roses that are not commonly grown. In rose books these yellows look spectacular and I'd love to seen them actually growing in someone's garden. Living in So. California, many of the roses you grow are a rare treat to me and so beautiful. As I've said before, to me the once-blooming old roses are the most beautiful of all, in a special way that the teas, chinas and noisettes do not have, even though they're lovely in their own way. It's great to have people from colder areas on the forum who can give a much broader scope to the old rose scene.

I can't believe you are in zone 6 and I'm almost in zone 8 and I don't have any blooms yet. I think the 25 degree weather we had a few weeks ago (not last week) really set my roses back.

I did see color beginning to show from buds on Golden Showers and Iceberg, so they should be blooming soon.

Buford, we had our share of temps around 20 here too. My "regular" roses are not even close to blooming, don't worry. Early yellows are always start blooming 5-6 weeks before regular flush, which is usually here around memorial day. Early yellows are a great way to extend your rose season. They are fragrant, healthy and last well in a vase, if you cut a branch. In your case thay would bloom in March.

Olga--it is due to your enabling that I got Cantabrigiensis. I saw its first bloom just last week and I ADORE it! Thank you so much. You are so right about the early blooming yellows. My Lady Banks has been blooming now for about one month and there is something cheery about those yellow blooms that say SPRING. I can hardly wait to see your pictures.

Oh, so I should start looking for the little buds! It is getting near May. Primula is getting big enough that I expect really good things this year.

Somehow my Hugonis never gives me that many flowers. Probably I should try another clone.

Today I happened to go by a house I formerly lived in and r. primula had many blooms open. It was basically in full bloom I think. Wish I had brought it with me when I moved! I guess it is about 5 years old now, and quite upright and about 6-7 feet tall.

I'm guessing my spinosissima, Doorenbos Selection, has about 5-7 days before it blooms.

I'm glad you posted this. My show is really starting now too. My early yellows are still too small to be blooming this year, I guess. But, Lady Banks looks wonderful. Yesterday I counted at least 2 dozen open blooms on Climbing Old Blush. This one has been an early bloomer for me since I put it in. My wingthorn rose has a few flowers and one early flower on Amanda Patenaude (Joasine Hanet). Spring is here.

That is such a neat rose. I wish I could grow it here. I am sure it would succumb to blackspot or heat but it is a great one to signal the season.

Well, Peter Beales said it was R. hugonis. Not the one at my house, but the mother plant at its house. There does seem to be a fair amount of variation among clones, but I don't know how common it is now for them to be grown from seed. The older clones of the yellows do seem to be 'better' as if they had been actively evaluated and selected. The mother plant is from the 1930's, I think. The exact date is probably something knowable.

Thank you. Patricia this rose is very BS resistant and BS pressure is HUGE here. Almost all repeat bloomers get BS here. However, CB stays clean for me. This is one amaizing rose. I don't know how it will handle winters with no chill, but BS shouldn't be a problem.

Mad Gallica, sorry I didn't see your post before, we posted almost the same time. This is very interesting. I used to have grafted hugonis form Pickering and now I have own root one, I think, from High Country roses. They are very different roses. More different then you can explain by difference between own root and grafted plants.

I am happy for you Olga ... especially when I am looking at 6inches of snow since Friday, and -11C weather right now and no plus temperatures until this coming Friday.

The typical spring shoulder season is going through it's annual troughs and highs for temperature - last Sunday everybody in shorts.

Keep an eye on the forecast as this is a really strong system and here is hoping to the Caribbean heat being strong enough to keep it way north of you. Got my bare roots potted and covered in the unheated garage and me sweating bullets they make it.

My roses have just started with my 2 older roses Praire Princess and American Beauty Climber taking the lead. My others are younger but with the amount of buds on all of them it will be a colorfull spring and summer. It is raining today but at least it is a light rain without much wind

Olga, I learned about these early yellows from your talking about them, and I am so glad they grow so well for you. So glad it's spring!

Congratulations, Olga! And how inspiring your photos are. Wish I could hope for a flowering of my R. hugonis, but something undermined the roots of my young own root plant last fall, and it has remained 95% dead. Sad; sad. I'll have to get a new plant, I think, and wait another couple of years before I get to see it flower (I hope) in the company of the Syringa microphilla I moved next to it. Last winter I also got Cantabrigiensis, Canary Bird and R. spin. 'Old Yellow', and replaced my Fruehlingsgold that we lost due to a botched transplanting. I love these roses! I have lots of Teas and Chinas, of course, and they're starting to flower now and are as lovely as any roses on the planet. But the pale yellow, small-leaved, early-blooming species roses belong with lilacs and late hellebores and daffodils to the delicate fresh flowers of a temperate climate spring.

I have a small early blooming plant of some sort. Lol, that sounds odd. I'm not sure exactly what it is. I received a small, and I mean small rose stick with barely no root from a trader 2 springs ago. It was just described as her grandmother's early blooming yellow rose. I somehow managed to keep it alive. It now looks like a short rose, but still smaller than your CB baby photo, lol. It is leafing out, and I sure hope I see some flower buds. If not at least I know I'll get early roses one of these years!

This is so exciting to see - Olga, the CB you donated is even getting a fat flower bud on it, which should generate some excitement to get it planted in the ground soon! No buds on the R. primula, but it is also doing well. Back home in Minnesota my parents are just now pulling the mulch off the garden because the snow just melted - but spring (or is it summer already?) is coming fast on the heels of winter. I have a few seedlings of early yellow species there that are getting quite large and I'm really hoping they'll finally begin blooming this year. They're so exotic and tough, and I'd love to get to work on breeding with them once I can get a piece of land of my own. I'm glad to see that some other hybridizers with better resources seem to have taken notice of their good qualities, too.

I have another hybrid spinosissima seedling I'm going to be watching closely this year; if it turns out to be especially pretty I'll certainly post some pictures. The growth alone is beautiful.

I have no signs of flower buds on mine. I was hopeful, and you posted such pretty pics of your roses on the other threads! Since you grow a few varieties, I was hoping you might have a clue as to what mine is even without flowers. I took a couple pics of my rose. Does it look like one of yours?
I put my hand in the pic so you could tell how small the leaves are.

Goodness!! Those thorns make me cringe!!

Remy, thank you. Your roses look more like some of the Spinosissimas to me, not like early oriental yellows. But I am not a specialist. I only have three spinosissimas in my garden and they also bloom right now and you said that your roses don't have buds yet. Do they have enough sun?

Remy, that could be Harison's Yellow. It looks like mine and that would fit the description of "grandmother's early blooming yellow rose."

I'l try and remember to look if my Harison's Yellow has visible buds yet. It blooms 'late' for a spinossisima, and all of them develop buds quite quickly.

My R. primula started blooming yesterday. R. hugonis shouldn't be far behind.

Yes, it has more than enough sun. I have it in my long border that runs the length of my driveway which is full of roses. It is next to LJS which blooms late for a once bloomer so I was hoping for earlier bloom. Though it may still be early comparatively, but if I want super early, I'm going to have to find one of the ones you posted, lol.
We are building a deck off the back of the house, so you know what this means... new garden bed!!

Ok, I've been out to look and Harison's Yellow doesn't have any buds yet. I'll probably not notice it again until it blooms. It's buried pretty deep in the rugosa ghetto.
