Advice & tips for preparing a rose bed in SE FL

Hi,

I am getting ready to undertake the next in a series of yard projects, which will be planting 4 Playboy rose bushes in my backyard.

Can those with experience in rose planting in Florida offer any advice or tips on preparing the soil for planting? The soil here is basically pure sand, and I know I will have to amend the soil with organics.

Would it be wise to remove the top 2 feet of soil and use a mix of topsoil, compost, and pink bark fines to fill it back in?

As far as compost is concerned, would I encounter any problems using horse manure (I have 2 horses)? Some of the manure is mixed in with shavings and urine, but I would be using material from the oldest part of the pile, so burn shouldn't be a problem.

I have also sourced alfalfa pellets at a local feed store and plan on top dressing the soil with it as well.

The rose bushes will be on drip irrigation lines, too.

Thanks!
