HELP!!! with boxwoods

Hi all, I just got a new job and one of the properties I work on has over 500 boxwoods! I am a northern gardener from Maine so I am fairly new to boxwoods. All the english boxwoods have been neglected and have out grown their spaces. Moving them is not an option. I will need to prune them hard at some point. My boss wants to open them up and then take hedge trimmers to them. Is this the right time to do it? That seems really extreme. Money/time is not a problem with this property so I want to make sure it is done right at the right time. I would love to hear from all of you that have more experience with this shrub. Plus, is their a good book on the subject? Thank you thank you
