Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener SIMILAR Problem

Just replaced sprocket assembly (including worm/gear drive)on old Craftsman 1/2 hp opener (no sensors). After reassemby, opener worked fine going up, but did not go back down (only clicked). Checked limit switches, disconnected door, and manually reset limit to lower position. Again, opener rotated counterclockwise to upper limit and stopped. When pressing again, just get click. I had replaced the worm/gear in the past and did not have this problem. Prior to sprocket breaking off, opener worked well. Any ideas??? Could it be the logic board, limit switches??? What controls the 'sending' message to the motor to reverse its direction??? Don't want to invest a lot in this old opener, however did just pay for the sprocket kit. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Cut your losses and chunk the Craftsman garage door opener. Get a Genie and you will never post a question about openers on this forum again. A little research on this forum will show you hundreds of posts about those badly engineered and cheaply produced monsters. There are probably more questions about them than anything else on this forum. I recommend the Genie "Excelerator". Opens twice as fast, quiet, has two lights, and extremely reliable. Remove the cover and take a look at the drive gear which is right in front of the motor. It is white nylon and is probably stripped. You will most likely find a lot of white 'sawdust' inside the cover. If that is actually your problem you can order the gear from Sears or any local opener dealer. The part number is 41A2817 and supposedly comes with instructions.

With the door manually closed does the closer operate properly. It could still be the sensors. Anything blocking the sensor at any point of the closing will reverse the door. One of the sensors could be loose and moving out alignment when the door closes.

'96 Craftsman 139 53648SRT model 1) problems closing....go down a lil a come back up. RPM sensor I suspect ??? 2) LED flashing 5 times.....RPM sensor ? 3) while researching above problems...now when the remote or wall unit (no pad) is engaged, there is nothing but a slight/quick "humming" noise..and nothing happens. This is a new symptom. 4) I have checked/tired to align the infra red sensors.... this model has both lights on constant, regardless of whether they are in sync or not. I checked the wiring from teh sensors back to the motor/unit. I'm not sure how to align them now. QUESTIONS: which do I address first ? I'm not sure I can align the infra red sensors without the "humming" and no activity when I engage the opener. Should I look at the RPM sensor first ? Is the gear stripped ??? causing the humming and non activity ? The opener was opening before I started working on it. Thanks to anyone and everyone who has advice on this.
