Golden Shrub Daisy- winter

I bought a Golden Shrub Daisy (Euryops pectinatus Viridis)

this summer. Didn't realize it was only hardy to 20 degrees F.

Is there any way to winterize this plant without

digging it up and bringing it in the house?

How about burlap?

Any help appreciated!

shrubs are not house plants ...

you dont tell us what zone you are .... a little burlap.. MIGHT get you one zone... but not 2 or 3 ....

we all try pushing zone... usually it doesnt work .. live and learn... either enjoy them as annuals.. or move on in your choices ..

I have a similar area at the end of my driveway, as most of us do. In my kill zone the worry is not only the snow load and the force of the plow, but also the road salt. My most recent solution for the kill zone has been Montauk Daisy. It can take drought and salt in the soil, and I just cut it to the ground in the fall, leaving the area bare for the winter months. The only problem with it is that it doesn't bloom until the end of September. But at least the area has some foliage for the summer months, and I also plant annuals in front to spruce things up. Another nice thing about the Montauk Daisy is that they propagate so easily. You can literally break off a branch, stick it in the soil, walk away, and it will root and flourish.

ajpa, let me know if you want seeds. I have the same colors. My white actually came true for the three plants that have bloomed. The key is to making sure the pods are ripe. I cut mine off last November. It takes a LONG time for them to be ready. Otherwise, you're just collecting chaff. I had good luck with dogwoods, carolina cherry laurels, and calycanthus floridus. BUT, powdery mildew got most of the dogwoods. The cherry laurels are going crazy, and the sweetshrub is doing okay. Only a few of the buddleia bloomed. And some are still so small I'm not sure they'll make it through the winter. I plan to do lots more this year. I sowed mine in October-Nov last year. Some need a warm wet period before the freeze.

I was curious and googled pruning Helmond's Pillar which is a similar shape to yours. Most of the resources said 'doesn't need pruning' and this one sentence: "Remove any floppy or unruly shoots from fastigiate berberis, such as 'Helmond Pillar', to preserve shape. You can prune other varieties after flowering" The two people I know who grow H's Pillar discretely tie it up with twine: one in the winter to keep it from splaying the other all the time because it is planted in too much shade and grows loosely. Just curious, Have you checked to see if it is on your state's invasive plants list.? I love the plant, but it has become a problem in open woodlands in Mass.

Something about it? It would have been better if it had been pruned to avoid that split trunk LOL. Although it's less likely to cause a problem than with some other plants, probably, I imagine this family being very strong wooded. (hence the common name of its cousin Parrotia) I will be planting its 'second cousin' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodoleia in the garden this spring. Like a somewhat showier version of the above. I wanted it to size up to being 3/8" caliper. However I will ground layer a branch cuz even tho I have the supposed hardiest one, it may not be hardy enough.

I don't know whether to call it a shrub or
a perennial. The tag said
"Golden Shrub Daisy".

I'm in zone 6a so I guess I have to
bring it in if I want to save it.

Won't live through the winter outside there. Won't like being inside, unless you have a bright and cool greenhouse. Not a rare and expensive item, I would not take the trouble myself. You will have to rid it of bugs before it comes in, and it is rather late for a plant to be brought indoors - ordinary indoor conditions will be like a sudden blast of summer after it has been outside nearly into winter.

Hi Mary,

I'm not familiar with this plant, but I did a bit of searching and it seems that it is easy to propagate from cuttings. Perhaps if you try to overwinter it indoors, you can take a few cuttings in case the original plant doesn't make it.

Personally, I don't do well with overwintering plants indoors, so I rarely do it. Maybe you have better luck. I guess if it's going to die outside anyway, you have nothing to lose by bringing it in, right?
