Noticing green and swelling buds, anyone else?

I am feeling a little concern for some of the shrubs in the garden. I think they are confused with all this warm weather after only a couple of weeks of colder temps. I don't think we have even had a hard freeze yet.

The lilac bush has green buds and the viburnum buds are looking pretty large for this time of year. Even our Japanese Maple has a spring bud look to it. I am wondering what is going to happen to the green buds once the cold and snow get here.

I had a rhododendron with a couple of blooms (not buds for next year-these actually popped) a month ago and now I have a couple of blooms on two azaleas. Our neighbors across the street have a 4' azalea covered in blooms right now. Either the plants or I have gotten totally confused this fall.

Hi cyn! :-) Nice to see you. Well, I will have to check my rhododendron and azaleas tomorrow and see what's up with those too. I'm glad it was only a couple of blooms on yours. It will be interesting to see if we get a full bloom on these shrubs next spring. I have heard that middle of next week it is expected to get colder here, so I hope that will be an end to the confusingly warm weather. We have enjoyed the weather entirely, but I do want to see a lovely spring display too.

Our May and June 2010 combined average temperature broke the record for the hottest 2 months ever. June was the second hottest month on record. August has been above normal thus far. "So how many blues are you up too now? How many different varieties? Which were your favorites this past spring?" At present, I have 7 northern highbush, 6 southern highbush, 17 rabbiteyes, one half high, and one low bush hybrid. I wouldn't mind replacing six of the seven northern highbush with better cultivars -- four are Duke, which I find a bit bland, and two are Bluecrop, which had a real problem with anthracnose during our very wet spring and summer. I'm thinking about picking up three or four new varieties this winter, and, even though I'm supposed to be focusing on norther highbush, Legacy is definitely on the list. I should have ordered one sooner, because, as you mentioned, it seems to get a lot of praise. Even though it's really pushing it for my climate, I did pick up a Sweetcrisp last summer, and I should have the opportunity to sample a few berries this spring. I have it tucked away under a frost blanket, but I probably need to check on it. I have a feeling it's going to bloom way too early and will need some protection. Your comments on Snowchaser almost swayed me, as well, but I decided to pass on it because it's such an early bloomer. Your description of our fall and winter thus far matches up perfectly with my own recollection, Ray. It got cold earlier than I expected -- we often make it into November before the first frost and freeze, but I lost my tomatoes in October this year, as well as some figs that weren't quite ready to pick.

Anyone else noticing the change?

I am more surrounded by trees these days. I used to be able to track the sun at sunset, over the river, and in the am, by where the sunrise was....in the cedar bush, I just notice the changing patterns of sun and shadow, though not so much shadow before the leaves. But there are longer days - the sun set today at 5:30 pm. Such a treat. And as I continue to sow, and watch my new babies grow, I am so much thinking about the growing season to come!!! two thoughts .... if they are new stock ... they could have been brought into the area already budded out ... second.. the nursery has a warmer setting than yours... both amount to micro climate ... you can cut.. break.. or scrape.. but when it all boils down ... patience is its own reward in very early spring ... test once.. but just stop after that ... it will come when its darn ready to.. or its dead.. either way.. there isnt much you can do about it.. and for sure.. its not hungry ... ken ps: if it was transplanted last year.. you didnt mention such ... in fact.. you havent given us much other than its not fast enough for you ... and the grass is greener on the other side of town ...

'Hardy Gardenia' azaleas all over the Washington, DC, area are blooming their heads off this fall. Yesterday, I passed a planting of Viburnums in downtown Rockville, MD, that were a few days from full bloom, and a couple of weeks ago in upstate New York there were Forsythias showing lots of color, probably a week away from blooming. Lots of horticultural hijinks this year...

I am pretty sure I heard a weather forecast that we may be finally getting at least some cold nights this week, but it will be interesting to see what the shrubs will do next spring. Today I see the buds on my lilac are granny smith apple green and looking ready to burst.

I was noticing yesterday a lot of activity on buds of my Viburnum sieboldii. Theres not been near as much cold weather to date this year as there was last year. I had 132 hours at or below freezing through December 15 last year. This year, only 28.
